Host commentator

60% possession and eight shots to one. Complete dominance.

The black and white scarves are being waved all around the ground. A special sight.

Southampton looked stunned.

Surely no way back for them is there?

What a goal this is!

A lovely one-two frees Willock on the left and he drifts inside before finding Almiron’s overlapping run.

He cuts it back for Longstaff who smashes it home.

Rampant.

Scoring one goal against this Newcastle side was already a tough ask. The Saint now need to score at least two.

Save.

Sharp from Bazunu who comes out quickly to stop Almiron latching on to a ball over the top.

13 minutes played and already five shots for the hosts.

The Saints need to weather this storm.

Bazunu just about deals with the corner but he didn’t know much about it.

Block!

Southamptoon really struggling on their right hand side.

Joelinton gets the better of his man before driving into the box but his shot is closed down and goes behind.

Chance!

Longstaff should score again!

He comes in from the right and lays it back to Guimarães, who reverses the ball brilliantly back into his path.

Longstaff takes a great first touch but then drags the shot wide with his left.

They’re trying to finish this one early.

The perfect start!

Longstaff picks up the ball outside the Saints area and lays it off to Tripppier, who cuts inside and gives it back to him.

Longstaff takes a touch and finds the bottom corner.

What a start. Deafening noise.

Wide.

Longstaff gets into space on the right hand side and pulls it across goal for Wilson, who can only poke wide under pressure.

Wilson takes a nice touch and draws an early foul. A fast start as expected.

We’re underway!

What a noise as both sets of players make their way out.

Raucous. Accompanied by a sea of black and white.

January signings Anthony Gordon and Harrison Ashby make their way on to the pitch to a rapturous reception.

They won’t feature tonight but their time will come.

It's almost time…

Southampton will be aiming to become just the third team ever to reach the League Cup final having lost the first leg at home.

Stoke City (winners in 1972) and Arsenal (winners in 1987) were the other two.

“There’s a lot of excitement around the supporters and rightly so.”

Franny Benali: We have seen in some quarters that believe the 1-0 score line after the first leg is enough to go through, but clearly Eddie does not believe that is the case, saying it is only half the job done.

Southampton will be coming into this in some ways quite please they are behind, as they have to go for it and there is nothing to lose. They need to be on top of their game to get a result tonight.

David Ginola: There are always nerves when you reach a semi-final, especially when you haven’t been in this situation for a long time. This is probably the first time the fans [Newcastle] have the chance to belief in something amazing. I hope they will have that. Football here is immense, immense.

Shay Given: I think it is a different football club now, the job Eddie has done has been amazing. I was refreshed that Eddie said they are coming here to win the game and be on the front foot. The fans will get right behind them from the start.

Not long to go until this one gets underway!

St James’ Park is already packed.

It doesn’t get bigger for this city.

On whether he is aware of the build-up in Newcastle

I think you have a lot of emotions before the game. We are keen to perform at our best level. I haven’t seen what the build up has been like in the city, I have been at the training ground. From my perspective it is about making sure the training it right and the preparation is right. If we can do that and get our processes correct, hopefully everything follows.

On whether a 1-0 lead changes the dynamic of the tie

Hopefully for us it means very little, we have to try to win the game today, that has been our focus, not thinking about a lead or a cushion we have. We want to win the game and approach it in the same fashion we would as a league game.

On Anthony Gordon

We are really pleased to get him, I think he is a player of huge potential, I think he really fits our way of playing, both in and out of possession, I think he will bring a lot of excitement to the supporters. He is really athletic. He is very much in our mould.

Newcastle United will be playing their biggest match in over two decades, with a spot at their first domestic cup final since the 1999 FA Cup Final.

It has been 47 years since they reached the League Cup final.

The lads.

Let's do this. 💪 pic.twitter.com/pwAvEe1DdN

Newcastle United hold a slender advantage from the first leg as Joelinton’s goal gave them victory at Southampton.

The Brazilian made amends for missing an earlier easy opportunity when he arrived on the end of substitute Alexander Isak’s perfect low cross to make the decisive contribution with 17 minutes left.
