Cooper, 43, is on the brink after Tuesday's disappointing 2-1 defeat to Leeds at Elland Road.

The result extended the club's winless run to eight matches, and leaves them just above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Only managerless Leicester have taken less points over the last five top-flight matches and nobody has conceded more.

Forest are now second-favourites to be relegated at 8/13, and their upcoming fixtures are perhaps the toughest of any of their rivals.

Their final nine fixtures include Aston Villa, Manchester United, Liverpool, Brighton, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Cooper retains the support of the majority of fans, and said he had not had any contact with owner Evangelos Marinakis or the board in the aftermath of their loss.

But notoriously trigger-happy Marinakis is already on his fourth manager of the campaign at Olympiacos, and clearly isn't afraid to chop and change.

But who would Nottingham Forest appoint?

Patrick Vieira has been tipped by many but is NOT favourite in Betfair's markets.

Instead, Rafa Benitez is the frontrunner at 3/1 to return to management for the first time since being sacked by Everton in January 2022.

The Spaniard is viewed as a safe pair of hands following successful spells with Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle. His pragmatic approach and experience of the division could serve him well.

Vieira, who was sacked by Crystal Palace in March, is available at 6/1 and is believed to have many admirers at the City Ground.

Marcelo Bielsa and Reims' highly-rated Will Still are offered at 5/1 and 8/1 respectively, ahead of 10/1 duo Vincent Kompany and Michael Carrick.

Graham Potter is priced at 12/1 to make an immediate return to management following his Chelsea sacking.

Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are locked together at 14/1, with Roy Keane (20/1) and Martin O'Neill (25/1) completing the market.
