ONE Royal Ascot punter was celebrating to the tune of £100,000 on day one – after a 'huge' bookie over-pay meant they won at inflated odds.
Dubai Future returned a shock 20/1 winner in the Wolferton Stakes but due to the punter betting with the Tote, they were paid out at a much bigger 28/1.
It is not known exactly how much the mystery punter staked, or whether it was a win only or each way poke.
But either way, the colossal six-figure payout was likely the biggest anywhere in the world on day one of Flat racing's biggest meeting.
And betting on the Tote – a slightly different form of bookie but regularly seen at racecourses – ensured an even bigger win.
The Tote reported a massive £31.6million bet into the pool on day one of the meeting all in all, up from £27.1m last year.
Tote racing director, Jamie Hart, said: “The King’s Stand was a whisker off beating the Derby as being the biggest win pool ever and I am confident that record will fall this week.
"What is hugely encouraging are the stats on the exotics, particularly the Swinger and Quinella, which UK punters are clearly getting stuck into as they cotton on to the value available to them.”

It was not all good news for punters though, especially for one who placed a £15,000 bet on Persian Force, who finished an agonising second behind Bradsell in the Coventry Stakes.
Conversely, that was a good result for bookmakers, with Paddy Powerreporting a winning day on Tuesday.
Paddy Power spokesman Paul Binfield said: “It was a solid start for the books with the last three results being the icing on the cake with the favourite second in each contest.
"Baaeed looks an exceptional animal, but didn’t hurt us due to his price and we took on Golden Pal in the King’s Stand so it was a winning day at this early stage of the week.”
