Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds has contacted Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop to praise the way he handled the backlash over Wrexham striker Paul Mullin puncturing his lung.

Mullin was injured in the early stages of Wrexham’s 3-1 win over a young United side in San Diego on Tuesday night when he collided with Bishop.

United’s fourth-choice keeper was lucky to get away with a yellow card and was loudly booed for the rest of the first half before being replaced at the interval.

Furious manager Phil Parkinson warned Bishop to keep away from Wrexham over the ‘reckless’ challenge.

And the club’s famous owner Reynolds threw his support behind Mullin, tweeting: ‘Paul Mullin puts his last drop of blood into everything he does. The entire @Wrexham_AFC community is pulling for a speedy recovery.’

Ryan Reynolds has since reached out to Bishop to praise the way he handled the backlash

But after Bishop issued a public apology and personally contacted Mullin, who is said to bear no grudge, Reynolds messaged the 23-year-old unprompted to thank him for the way he handled the incident and wishing him well for the future.

United were unhappy that Parkinson’s comments inflamed the issue but are now believed to consider the matter closed.

Since the incident, Mullin was pictured being discharged and chatting to his team-mates and club staff less than 24 hours after being admitted to hospital.

Mullin later tweeted: ‘Discharged, Thank you to everyone at UC San Diego Health for the incredible care! Will keep everyone updated but rest and recover is the 1st step!’

It has since been reported that Bishop is set for a permanent transfer to Sunderland, despite featuring in pre-season for the young United side.
