Seven times Ten Hag brutally punished wayward Man Utd flops as he swings axe following 3-0 Manchester derby drubbing | The Sun

MANCHESTER UNITED manager Erik ten Hag is no stranger to throwing the book at his players after embarrassing performances.

The Dutchman has often hit individuals and the squad with brutal punishments since he took over as manager and implemented a no-nonsense approach.

From Cristiano Ronaldo to Jadon Sancho, any player calling out him or the club out has been swiftly dealt with.

And poor results can make their manager come down hard on his players.

He has punished his entire team after losing 3-0 to Manchester City and slammed them as "unprofessional" after a 7-0 loss to Liverpool, which was the club's heaviest defeat in 91 years.

Here, SunSport take a look back at the SEVEN times Ten Hag has disciplined his team.

Brentford 13km run

In just his second game in charge, United suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Brentford.

The fuming boss made his players undergo an extra practice session that involved them running 13km (8.5 miles) in 33C heat.

Ten Hag chose the distance because Brentford stars had run a total of 13km more than United during the match.

Interestingly, United reportedly ran 99.01km against Liverpool, the lowest since the humiliation by the Bees.

Garnacho's pre-season telling off

Alejandro Garnacho almost blew his Man Utd career by turning up late for team meetings during pre-season.

The winger was taken on the international tour to Thailand, but he did not play after twice turning up late for team meetings.

Garnacho's behaviour improved and the Argentine earned a new contract.

He has even been described as a "rascal" by a former coach.

Ten Hag said: "The start of the season was difficult for him. I was not happy with him, but the last weeks I was happy with him – a better attitude, more resilience, more determination.

"Young kids have to grow and to raise their personality. They have to know what the laws and demands are in top football. You have to fulfil every day the high standards."

Ronaldo dropped

Cristiano Ronaldo was axed by Ten Hag after he refused to come off the bench against Tottenham.

The Portuguese hero stormed down the tunnel and left during the game.

Ten Hag punished Ronaldo, demoting him to train with United's Under 21-team and he left him out the squad for the next match versus Chelsea.

Ronaldo (again) after interview

Ronaldo was dropped after his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, as he slammed the club from top to bottom and claimed he wasn't respected by Ten Hag.

He never played for the club again as Man Utd terminated his contract.

A defiant Ten Hag sternly said he didn't lose a wink of sleep over kicking Ronaldo out and insisted without tough rules a mess would be created.

Rashford benched for oversleeping

Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score the winner in United's 1-0 win away at Wolves.

He was surprisingly not included in the starting XI and he revealed afterwards it was due to punishment.

Rashford admitted to being late for a team meeting because he overslept.

Ten Hag praised Rashford for his response to being penalised, saying: "Everyone has to match rules and values and if you react like this, it is the right answer."

Early wake up post-Liverpool battering

Liverpool ran riot against Man Utd in March 2023 as they won 7-0.

And a fuming Ten Hag said in his post-match interview: "I saw 11 individuals losing their heads. That is not Manchester United, we have higher standards.

“It is really unprofessional. When you don’t keep the standards you see what can happen.

“I said in the dressing room it is unacceptable. It is only one game but the defeat is unacceptable for our fans, especially against Liverpool.

“It was really undisciplined.

“You can have set backs but what cannot happen is you don’t stick together, you have to do your job."

Ten Hag demanded a reaction and he began the response by arriving at Carrington at 7am the day after the game.

The players were punished, having to report to training early.

Sancho banned

Jadon Sancho publicly called out Ten Hag after being left out of the squad for a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal with his manager citing his training ground performances.

The winger claimed he was a "scapegoat" in a shock social media post.

A raging Ten Hag refused to be undermined by one of his players and held crunch talks with Sancho.

When he refused to apologise for his comments, the gaffer banished him from the squad and first-team training.

Sancho has even not been allowed to use certain facilities at Carrington such as the canteen.

Silence after City embarrassment

Man Utd's nightmare start to the 2023/24 season continued as they were humiliated 3-0 at home by bitter rivals Manchester City.

The ruthless Ten Hag tore into his players after the game with SunSport exclusively revealing he made the team sit in silence in the dressing room after the game.

That was so the struggling stars could hear City celebrations.

Ten Hag also cancelled the team's day off to speed up the inquest into the loss and dismal start to the season.

He even sent players "homework" in the form of personalised videos highlighting their errors in the game.
