Sky reporter left clinging to microphone as Van den Bergh goes rogue again

A Sky Sports reporter stubbornly repelled Dimitri van den Bergh’s attempt to steal her microphone after Belgium’s dramatic win over the Netherlands at the World Cup of Darts.

Van den Bergh’s infamously took the mic from another Sky reporter, Michael Bridge, during his win over Jonny Clayton in the quarter-finals of the last World Championship at Alexandra Palace.

The Belgian proceeded to make a rambling speech on stage which left fans and commentators cringing. Pundit Wayne Mardle tweeted at the time: "NO BRIDGEY! NEVER LET GO OF THE MIC! EVER." He then added: "STOP. I CAN'T WATCH."

There was almost a repeat following Belgium’s 8-7 win over the Netherlands in the second round in Frankfurt as Van den Bergh and teammate Kim Huybrechts were quizzed by Abigail Davies.

At the start of the interview, Van den Bergh went to grab the mic, only for Davies to stand her ground, saying: “I’m not going to hand you the mic,” prompting laughter from Huybrechts.

Davies was praised for her actions as fans were spared another one-man show from the 28-year-old. One said: “Another darts MBE surely incoming after that decision, Abi!” A second agreed: “A professional in action.”

Davies also won praise from former darts presenter Helen Chamberlain, who tweeted: “Absolutely glorious from @swanabi there. ‘No (Dimi) I am not giving you the mic’ [laughing face emoji].”

Davies replied: “I can't even tell you how much grip was still required hahaha.”

The interview continued in routine fashion and it was far cry from 48 hours earlier when Van den Bergh and Huybrechts were quizzed separately due to bad blood between the pair, who completely blanked each other during their 4-0 win over Finland.

Following an outcry on social media, and among Belgian darts fans in particular, they agreed to put their differences to one side, even issuing a joint statement to that effect ahead of their win over China on Friday.
