LEG 1 Nostrum
NOSTRUM hated soft ground when a still-fair second at Goodwood last time and is better judged on his excellent comeback win at Newmarket.
This son of Kingman went close in a Group 1 late last season and relished the fast ground when scoring at HQ in July. These conditions should bring out the best in him.
LEG 2 Alhambra Palace, True Legend
ALHAMBRA PALACE can give William Haggas his third Melrose in the past five seasons. He sneaks in at the bottom of the weights on the back of two excellent wins.
His first came over 1m4f at Ascot where he had almost five lengths in hand. He more than matched that form when going in again at Sandown earlier this month.
He tanked along there and didn’t have to hit top gear. Despite his low weight, Adam Farragher takes 3lb off which could make the difference in a tight race.

LEG 3 Sacred, Kinross
SACRED was impressive when winning the Group 3 Strensall Stakes at Lingfield on comeback in May.
She picked up strongly there and showed a sharp turn of pace over this trip. She then dropped back to 6f for a tight second in the Group 1 Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.
It’s a slight worry that she flopped in this race 12 months ago but she has run well at York before and moving back up to this distance is a plus.
Defending champ Kinross was in sparkling form last season and followed up in a couple of Group 1s.
His form has been solid this season and he battled strongly when taking the Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. He goes on any ground and will go close again under Frankie Dettori.
LEG 4 Real Dream, Sweet William, HMS President
REAL DREAM looks perfect for the Ebor and has more to offer for Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore. He kicked off the season with a smooth win at Kempton before running a good third at the Dante meeting here in May.
Those runs were over 1m4f before he relished stepping up to this distance when winning by more than four lengths at Ascot. He goes on any ground and has a lot more to come. It’s a cliche but he really does look a Group horse in waiting.
SWEET WILLIAM has been a strong favourite for this since his impressive win in strong company at Goodwood last time. That built on an excellent effort at Newbury where he looked full of staying power. A 4lb penalty for his latest success gives him a massive chance.
HMS PRESIDENT is an honest performer at this level and ran another belter when a close second in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot. He has possibly lost his winning chance from this higher mark but Alan King’s hope has every chance of making the frame.
LEG 5 Summerghand, Mr Wagyu
SUMMERGHAND went agonisingly close for us when beaten a neck in the Great St Wilfrid last week and can match last year’s success in this race.
It’s interesting that trainer David O’Meara puts the visor back on the veteran who likes this trip and goes on any ground. He’ll need a little bit of luck with his hold-up style but has a big chance again.
MR WAGYU is building up a losing run now but he ran his best race for a while when fourth in the Stewards’ Cup and he has won 5lb higher in the weights before so he could run into the frame.
LEG 6 Purosangue
PUROSANGUE sets a high standard after two good efforts at Group level. After winning his maiden at Haydock, he stepped up for a solid fifth at Newmarket before leaving that form behind with an excellent second in the Molecomb at Glorious Goodwood.
