Van Gerwen says Peter Wright has big mouth ahead of World Grand Prix clash

Two of the biggest names on planet darts will collide in the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix tonight.

Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright booked their places in the last four in contrasting fashion. Van Gerwen produced a superb display to beat Chris Dobey while Wright, by his own admission, was fortunate to beat Dimitri Van den Bergh, who missed three match darts in their dramatic quarter-final.

Wright has been cheekily sniping at his chief rivals, Van Gerwen and Gerwyn Price, this week, insisting he remains the world’s best player. After his win over Dobey, Van Gerwen addressed Wright’s public comments.

“We all know Peter has a big mouth,” the Dutchman told reporters. “For someone who is always that quiet at home… we all know what it is. Peter is a good player but sometimes, when he gets in his mood, he says some stupid things.

“Everybody knows that. You get on with it and just have to do the right thing for yourself. I know I’m the better player, and I think everyone knows that as well. I don’t need to say that, I just need to make sure I do the right thing and make sure I’m going to beat him.”

The Grand Prix features the double-in format and Van Gerwen was relentless on the outer ring throughout his win over Dobey. He capped off a dominant display with a 105 checkout, sealed with successive double tops.

"I think I'm playing really well in this tournament," said Van Gerwen, who defeated Gary Anderson and Stephen Bunting in reaching the quarter-finals. "My tops is going in really smoothly and that gives you a lot of confidence. I feel phenomenal but you have to keep doing it.

"I've been working really hard so I'm over the moon. If Peter continues to play like he did tonight it will be a walkover, but we all know that Peter won't play like that."

The other semi-final will see Price face Nathan Aspinall, who defeated Madars Razma and Martin Lukeman respectively in their quarter-finals.
