Who was Ricky Bibey? | The Sun

RICKY BIBEY was an international rugby league player who had an 11-year professional career.

He was a two-time Challenge Cup-winning forward and his career was cut short due to Achilles troubles.


Leigh-native Bibey sadly died at the age of 40 in Florence, Italy in July 2022.

He was born in Leigh in Greater Manchester and started playing rugby at Leigh East.

Bibey made his pro debut for Wigan Warriors in 2001 against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

In his second season as a professional, Bibey won the Challege Cup with the Warriors as they beat St Helens 21-12 at Murrayfield.

Two years later he would find himself playing for his former rivals, after moving to St Helens ahead of the 2004 season.

And it proved to be a productive move as Saints beat their big rivals Wigan 32-16 with Bibey starting on the bench at the Principality Stadium.

Bibey also played for England A, during their tour of the Pacific Islands, picking up three caps.

When did Ricky Bibey die?

Ricky Bibey died in Florence on July 17, 2022 in his hotel room.

Italian police are investigating the circumstances around his death.

Former club Wakefield Trinity posted: "Trinity are saddened to hear of the passing of former prop-forward Ricky Bibey, aged 40.

"Ricky played for Trinity between 2007 and 2009, making 60 appearances.

"We send our condolences to Ricky's family and friends at this tough time."
