Alison Hammond discusses missing ring on This Morning
Last week, This Morning presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary discussed the recent debate of whether singing loudly in a theatre was disrespectful to the actors on stage. After it was revealed that the new rules meant you could no longer sing, Alison exclaimed she was “devastated” which led to many being unhappy with her response.
Now, the ITV chat show has been hit with 66 Ofcom complaints, following both presenters posting an apology to their social media.
The row came after a performance of The Bodyguard in Manchester was halted when police were called to break up an audience bust-up.
During her appearance on This Morning, Alison said: “[Theatre staff] are regularly walking up and down the aisles before the performance and during the interval with ‘no singing’ signs’ I mean, I can’t believe it, I’d be devastated.”
She soon took to her social media to apologise for her comments when she realised she had offended theatregoers and actors who are passionate about their performances in the theatre.
Alison wrote: “After reflection and the comments I made on Wednesday’s show, I want to apologise to anyone who I offended especially the incredibly talented theatre performers, who I have the utmost respect for.
“I want to use my platform for good as always and want to stand up with the performers, front of house and theatre staff, especially after seeing what happened at The Bodyguard in Manchester, which has made me sick to my stomach.
“Once again I am truly sorry but trust me I will do better in the future.” (sic)
However, her apology left many underwhelmed, with former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Philips, fuming: “Alison thank you for your apology.
“But I would just like to say, you have no idea what it is really like for those performers in the shows where the songs are popular hits and certain members of the audience feel entitled to join in.
“Performers are unsure what to do, They are not trained when audiences get out of control and [are] arguing with each other.
“It’s so distressing. Let’s hope this behaviour stops and normality returns.” (sic)
She also appeared on Jeremy Vine on Tuesday, April 11 and expressed: “It is a strange thing that happened, almost post-pandemic I have to say, I didn’t experience this before where you have to have security guards in the audience.

“People feel that sense of entitlement that this is their show and they can join in, and actually we have Grease which is at the Dominion and is coming up, we have an announcement at the beginning.
“We ask people not to sing along, don’t sing along, you will get your opportunity at the end of the show to be joined in and be part of the show.
“That was an announcement made ahead of time, people feel that going to a show is like karaoke, sort of very familiar songs, people can stand at a party or a club.
Dermot O’Leary also posted an apology to his social media where he explained: “A lot of people commenting about a reaction to a story we covered on This Morning about the ‘Bodyguard’ show and audiences singing along
“Could I politely urge anyone passing judgement on the clip to watch the whole interview… as I was actually arguing AGAINST people singing too loudly in theatres.” (sic)
Britain’s Got Talent winner George Sampson hit out once again at Dermot and replied: “Weird take, and a disappointing read if I’m honest.
“People, Don’t sing at all, at ANY volume when you’re watching musicals unless it’s been okayed by the production. You’re there to be performed for, not performed with.” (sic)
This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
