Classic sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo ran for seven series between 1982 and 1992 and was enjoyed by a loyal audience. Actress Vicki Michelle joined Lorraine Kelly on Monday as a guest on the Scottish presenter’s self-titled ITV morning show, and took aim at cancel culture as she advised those unhappy with a programme “if you don’t want to watch it, don’t.”

The 72-year-old was discussing the classic show with Lorraine when the subject of cancel culture came up.

“It was hysterical,” she said of the show. “But they wrote it so it was one, two, three, laugh; one, two, three, laugh.

“And we had a live audience, we’d record with a live audience.”

Reflecting on how things have changed in recent years, she made clear her thoughts on cancel culture.

“And I think that, you know, nowadays you’ve got to be so careful about what you say,” she explained.

The radio presenter continued: “But I don’t think there was that much in ‘Allo ‘Allo that warranted people not to watch it.

“I mean, I always say, ‘if you don’t want to watch it, don’t watch it…'”

“Well this is it, you do have a choice,” Lorraine agreed.

“You do have a choice!” Vicki emphasised as Lorraine continued: “You can turn over or turn it off or whatever you want to do.”

It’s not the first time the actress has spoken out against “wokeism”.

She said in an interview with GB News in 2021 that she was “sure” the public is sick of being told what they should and should not like.

She added censoring makes everyone “uncomfortable” and instead, people should be able to “laugh” at what they like.

The show was set during WWII, based in the German-occupied French town of Nouvion and centred around the life of hapless cafe owner René Artois. He regularly had to deal with Gestapo officer, Herr Otto Flick.

Michelle’s character, a waitress who spoke in English with a French accent, was in love with René, played by the late Gorden Kaye.

In an interview with The Mirror, she added: “Let’s face it, ‘Allo ‘Allo! is about the war so it was quite difficult at the beginning, but none of those shows were written to offend anyone, those shows were written to make people laugh and they were loved by the country.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9pm on ITV.
