Angelica Ross Says Emma Roberts Has Apologized After Alleged Transphobic Comment On Set Of ‘AHS: 1984’

Angelica Ross said Wednesday that her American Horror Story: 1984 co-star Emma Roberts has apologized after Ross earlier in the day took to social media to accuse Roberts of misgendering her on the set of the Ryan Murphy series.

Ross, who is trans, said Roberts extended a private apology, thanking her for “calling and apologizing, recognizing your behavior was not that of an ally. I will leave the line open to follow up on your desire to do better and support social justice causes with your platform.”

In another Instagram Live post, Ross revealed that that during a momentary break between AHS scenes and in conversation with a crew member, Roberts jokingly complained that Ross was being “mean” to her. Ross said the crew member, attempting to break the tension, said, “Okay ladies, that’s enough. Let’s get back to work,” to which Roberts allegedly replied, “Don’t you mean lady?”

Ross, who said the incident left her blood “boiling,” said she was wary of speaking up about Roberts’ behavior, fearing repercussions. “I’m like, if I say something, it’s gonna be me that’s the problem,” she said. “I know this because there was someone who spoke up about what she was doing, and they got repercussions from it.”

Ross stated she was “done” after the incident and kept away from Roberts for the rest of the season of AHS: 1984, the ninth season of the horror franchise that aired in the fall of 2019 on FX.

During another Instagram Live, Ross also discussed a time on the AHS: 1984 set when she noticed a worker wearing shirts with the words “Build That Wall,” and “I Don’t Kneel” while working. She said when she brought it to the attention of higher-ups, it was dismissed as “free speech.”

The show’s producer 20th Television declined comment.
