Antiques Roadshow: Rare cufflinks valued up to £1,0000
During a classic episode of Antiques Roadshow on BBC One, expert Amin Jaffer was presented with a historic incense burner by a guest.
The delicate item has been in the guest’s family since the time of his great-grandparents in the 1800s.
“My great-grandparents immigrated from Iran to India and they were traders and merchants,” the guest explained.
Amin said the pierced holes in the intricate metal object indicated that it was an incense burner which would have been used with flowers all around it.
He said the incense used back in the day was probably oud or frankincense at ritual occasions.
The guest’s grandmother inherited the item and she used it right up to the late 1950s.
“This was the way that we refreshed the air and also incense was used in so many religious rituals,” Amin shared.
“I think this is indeed late 19th Century made from a metal alloy using motifs that come from the 17th Century.”

When the expert asked the guest if he had any idea of the item’s value, he replied: “I have absolutely no idea because it’s been in the house for nearly 100 years!”
The expert then revealed he thought the item could fetch between £1,000 to £1,500 at auction.
The guest gasped before replying with an enormous grin on his face:” “Good heavens, that’s amazing.”

“For me, it’s the family tradition where the value really resides,” Amin explained following his valuation.
It was clear the guest had no intention of selling the burner despite it being worth a considerable amount of money.
The guest said he would have to decide which one of his three children to give the incense burner to, which made Amir chuckle.
