Axed Sky TV show returning 13 years after getting the chop – but there’s a twist

TV series Smash is set to return more than 13 years since it was axed – but with a huge twist.

The US musical drama followed the behind the scenes action of a fictional Broadway musical called Bombshell, as viewers watched the lives of the performers outside of the theatre.

It featured acting icons including Will and Grace's Debra Messing, American Idol's Katherine McPhee and Hollywood legend Anjelica Huston and gained more than 11 million viewers on its debut.

Smash aired on US TV network NBC before transferring to Sky Atlantic in the UK in 2012, but was axed the following year after just two seasons.

During its tenure, Smash gained critical acclaim and won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography, as well as being nominated in four separate categories at the Emmy Awards ceremony in 2012.

There is exciting news for fans however, as the series is now set to return as a stage musical.

Jurassic Park and The Fabelman's director Steven Spielberg is behind the new production, which is set to hit the stage on Broadway in New York.

Following the announcement, Hollywood director Steven said in a statement: "Smash is near and dear to my heart, and it was always my hope that a musical inspired by the show would eventually come to the stage."

He added: "We now have an incredible creative team, and I’m looking forward to completing the Smash journey which began with my producing partners over 10 years ago."

Robert Greenblatt, the producer of the original series, also shared excitement for the upcoming stage musical, saying: "Speaking for myself and Neil Meron, we’re elated that Steven wanted to join us as we bring Smash to the stage, as we’ve always felt that Shaiman and Wittman’s incredible score belonged on Broadway."

He added: "And collaborating with the incomparable Susan Stroman, one of the best directors of musicals, plus first-class bookwriters, Rick Elice and Bob Martin, and our original choreographer, Josh Bergasse, is pure joy."
