This morning’s weather forecast has angered BBC Breakfast hosts who said their sleep had been majorly disrupted by lightning hitting parts of Manchester during the early hours.

In a segment focusing on the unusual weather, Ben Thompson and Rachel Burden shared a video of lightning hurtling through the skies surrounding the BBC building in Manchester, where the BBC Breakfast studio is based.

The footage prompted the presenters to complain that while the photos were great, it hadn’t been ideal for getting a good night’s sleep.

“That’s what woke me up this morning,” said Ben.

While Rachel responded: “It’s fine when you don’t have to sleep, but if you’re trying to get some kip, it’s not quite so helpful.”

The video was taken at around 2am, just a couple of hours before the morning hosts have to awake for BBC Breakfast.

However, although the presenters did not have a good night’s sleep they did admit the photos were great, with Ben going as far as saying they were better than what the BBC weather team had.

“I think our lightning pictures are better than Matt’s lightning pictures, actually,” said Ben.

However, weather presenter Matt Taylor quickly clapped back at the presenters, saying he could look at lightning pictures all night long.

“Who needs sleep when you’ve got storms around,” he told the presenters.

Matt also said that opportunities for lightning photos are set to continue with the freak weather conditions likely to reappear.

The sunny spell of clear skies is expected to be disrupted by more thunderstorms today, which could lead to risk for those in affected areas.

Some areas can expect to see a month’s worth of rain fall in just a couple of hours, which could lead to flash flooding.

“It’s quite a stormy day for some of you, but not for all,” Matt confirmed.

However, Matt also confirmed the hot temperatures would remain.
