BBC Breakfast star Jayne McCubbin was forced to apologise after being caught in a major live blunder.

Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, 51, teamed up for the latest instalment of the morning programme, presenting the top news stories with viewers across the country on Monday (August 21).

The Women's World Cup was one of today's major talking points following England's devastating 1-0 loss to Spain during Sunday's (August 20) final.

Despite the heartbreaking defeat, BBC Breakfast focused on the Lionesses still being an inspiration, especially to young girls who will one day follow in their footsteps.

After speaking to sports correspondent John Watson who was live from a grassroots club in Wembley, the studio turned to Blackburn Rovers.

Three of England's biggest stars, Ella Toone, Keira Walsh and Georgia Stanway came through the ranks at Blackburn and Sally explained that Jayne was there with the next generation of players.

But as the presenter handed over to Jayne, it was clear she didn't know she was on air as she was busy making conversation with the young players, asking them questions about their teams.

As the reporter returned to her spot, Sally repeated: "Morning Jayne".

A stunned Jayne seemed shocked to hear her co-star's voice as she responded: "Oh! Good morning to you!"

"Are we live on television?," she laughed as Sally confirmed: "You're on!"

Jayne managed to laugh off the blunder as she quipped: "I'm so sorry!" before continuing with the segment.

The Women's World Cup coverage was present throughout the programme, but this didn't sit well with all fans who headed to social media to complain.

One viewer penned: "Right, it's not coming home, move on #BBCBreakfast," as a second added: "They lost, get over it! #BBCBreakfast".

Echoing this, another wrote: "Don’t think we need another morning of football. Other things are happening in the world".

A fourth chipped in: "Shame about the Lionesses but if they had won you would never have heard the end of it #BBCBreakfast".
