BBC viewers turn off over sewage special as they tuck into breakfast

Jon Kay speaks to guests about sewage poo in the water

BBC Breakfast sparked a backlash on Tuesday morning after Jon Kay presented a sewage special from Langstone Harbour.

Many viewers claimed they were forced to “turn off” after the sewage chat put them off their breakfast.

Introducing the show, Jon began: “Good morning. Welcome to BBC Breakfast. I’m live in Portsmouth this morning with Carol…Ben and Tina are in the studio and here are your headlines at six o’clock.

“Sewage in our water, a BBC investigation suggests that three major water companies released raw sewage illegally hundreds of times last year.

“We’ve got a special programme for you this morning, exploring the issue and finding out what is being done to fix it.”

In another segment, Jon spoke with two guests, a scientist and a profession from the University of Portsmouth, where they chatted about what was causing the sewage problem.

Citizen scientist Rob Bailey went on to explain the reason why he stopped swimming in the harbour.

He said: “I was a sea swimmer and I’ve given up because of what we found in the water.”

The guest added: “We found pharmaceuticals, recreational drugs, pesticides…”

The BBC host weighed in: “It’s sewage poo that gets the headlines and the attention and makes us all feel queasy. But I suppose there are things that we can not throw down the toilet, which would at least improve some of that.”
