Beloved BBC One drama axed as lead star says 'we won't do another series' | The Sun

LAST Tango in Halifax star Anne Reid has confirmed the BBC drama won't return for a sixth series.

It was one of the most beloved shows on television and ran from 2012 to 2016, before returning in 2020.

Anne, 87, appeared on Good Morning Britain earlier today and presenter Ed Balls was desperate to know if, "there's any chance of another series".

She told the superfan: "I think a christmas special would be nice, we wouldn’t do another series."

Last Tango in Halifax follows elderly couple Celia and Alan (Derek Jacobi), who tie the knot after reuniting as pensioners after knowing each other from school.

Their respective daughters, Caroline and Gillian, are played by two of the most sought after TV actresses Sarah Lancashire and Nicola Walker.

Anne said she had spoken to her co-stars about a one-off Christmas special, adding: "It would be lovely.

"I know Derek would be up for it. And I've talked to Sarah, I don't know about Nicola."

Season five of the hit show aired back in early 2020, and a delay in the drama returning had been blamed on Sally Wainright – who is also the writer behind Happy Valley – finding the time to put pen to paper.

Sally has been working on BBC crime drama Happy Valley with Sarah Lancashire playing the lead role.
