Below Deck Mediterranean season eight teased by Bravo
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Below Deck Mediterranean.
Below Deck Mediterranean’s Kyle Viljoen shared details of his “traumatic” experience just days after season eight of the Bravo and Hayu reality series premiered.
Kyle Viljoen first made his TV debut in season seven of Below Deck Med as the second steward and has returned for the latest outing to continue his duties.
And even though there has already been plenty of drama on board the Mustique, Kyle has suffered a major health scare away from the cameras as well.
Taking to social media, Kyle explained he and his fiance Zachary had a “scary ride” after he started a new medication which led to him feeling unwell.
He did not realise, however, that this would become the “most painful and traumatic bodily experience of my life”.

The 30-year-old went on to explain he was suffering throat pain “like none other” that had spread to his mouth, lips, hands and feet.
He originally went to a walk-in clinic where he was diagnosed with hand-foot-mouth disease but a couple of days later, he was suffering from blisters, the inability to swallow easily and a swelling tongue.
As the symptoms worsened, Zachary decided to rush Kyle to the NYU ER and was examined by more than 20 doctors, head to toe.
It was then during his stay at the hospital that the Below Deck Med star was diagnosed with SJS (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome), “a rare serious disorder of the skin and mucous membranes”.

Thankfully, he was able to receive the treatment needed to stop the pain and is currently in recovery.
Kyle posted some upsetting pictures of him in hospital bed with close-ups of his blisters and wounds caused by SJS.
There is also a cute photograph of Zachary kissing the top of Kyle’s head following his ordeal.
He took the time to thank his other half as well as his friends, family and the staff at NYU hospital for helping him through these difficult few days.

Kyle wrote: “With an impeccable medical staff, a loving fiancé, and support of friends and family I am working towards making a full recovery.
“Having eaten my first meal in 7 days and finding that coconut milk helps with mouth blisters, I am over the moon with optimism and hope.
“A few things I’ve learned from this experience. One, advocate for your health and treat your body seriously. If something doesn’t feel right seek treatment.
“Two, family and a support system is EVERYTHING. Without them, I’m not sure where I’d be. And three, try to always get through rough times with lots of love and even more laughs (even when they hurt).”
Below Deck Mediterranean is available to watch every Tuesday on Hayu.
