Bernie Winter’s (Jane Hazlegrove) eyes lit up when she discovered Shelley’s secret way to earn money in Coronation Street.
Shelley is a friend of Paul’s (Peter Ash). They met during an MND support group meeting and have now developed a connection. Shelley has had motor neurone disease longer than Paul, meaning she is providing a look into the future for the character, who will eventually lose all mobility in his body.
During a visit to Shelley’s flat in Wednesday’s (August 30) episode, Paul and Bernie discovered she had been buying laptops on an old credit card and selling them to fund for her carers.

Bernie and Paul initially agreed that getting involved would be a bad idea, but Paul then returned home with a laptop for Summer’s (Harriet Bibby) birthday, making out that it was being sold for cheaper than he expected.
While Paul kept this secret, Bernie was back at the flat developing one of her own.
As she chatted to Shelley about growing the business, Bernie explained that she’s got a mate on the markets who could help move some of the laptops – for a cut.
Bernie went on to say that previously, she could never afford to pay for things like Paul’s driving lessons or travelling for a gap year, but doing this will allow her to help pay for the continuous care he’ll need as his MND progresses.
A few months ago, when Paul learnt that Bernie had applied for Personal Independence Payment on his behalf, Paul was livid, so what will he think if he finds out about his mum dabbling in crime to help him?
And will this all end terribly if the police get involved?
