Big Brother stars who’ve slammed show – ‘ruined my life’ and shunning fame

Big Brother has welcomed hundreds of housemates through the doors of his famous house over the past 23 years.

After a five-year hiatus, the reality has returned to our screens on ITV2 with a brand new batch of contestants hoping to win the £100,000 cash prize in the final next month. While some stars have credited the show for changing their life in a positive way, others have been left "miserable".

The likes of Alison Hammond and Josie Gibson have become huge names in the world of television and showbiz since their stay in the house but others have decided to ditch fame completely.

As the 2023 cast battle to become the first winner of the rebooted version, Daily Star take a look back at the ex-housemates who have slammed the show since leaving.

Nick Bateman

Nasty Nick, the original Big Brother villain, has escaped the media storm and created a new life for himself in Australia where no one really recognises him. He famously given the nickname after he pinned other housemates against each other during his controversial stint on the show, leading to him being disqualified.

He tols Lorraine Kelly on the ITV talk show: ""I've been here in Australia 12 years. It's just much nicer – blues skies all the time great weather, great food. It's refreshing and it’s just nice to be somewhere where you're happy. You can’t change the past, all you can do is change the present or the future."

Penny Ellis

Big Brother 2 star Penny says she has been mocked, jibed and ridiculed for 20 years since appearing on the show back in 2001. She famously dropped her towel during the live feed by accident which sparked an apology from Channel 5 for airing the moment in the 2001 series.

She previously told Premier Christianity Magazine: ""It has been 20 years of being mocked, and jibed and ridiculed. I lost all my money, my reputation, my church, my job, my self-esteem, my friends, my home – that two weeks in the house I lost everything."

Chantelle Houghton

Celebrity Big Brother 2006 winner Chantelle has previously revealed that finding fame in the house left her "miserable". She later returned for Ultimate Big Brother in 2010 but said that she needed to take a step away from the showbiz world "for my mental health".

The reality TV star told The Sun recently: "I needed to step out of the spotlight for my mental health. I was going through a really awful time. I was abused for a very, very long time. I lost myself in a lot of misery and I’m getting myself back bit by bit and enjoying being the person I always was."

TV star Laura, who appeared on the show in 2016, previously revealed that appearing on Big Brother 'ruined' her life and compared her experience to "being in a living nightmare".

"I lost all self-worth. I forgot that my family were watching, my friends were watching." she said in a YouTube video. "I'd sit in silence. I had nothing left to give. It was the darkest, loneliest time of my life. I realised my life was not going to go back to how it was. My life changed but it literally ruined my life. It ruined it."
