Following Dan Spencer (Liam Fox)’s guilty plea in court in Emmerdale, and the shock news that the man he punched has died of his injuries, Dan and Amelia (Daisy Campbell) come up with a risky plan to go on the run together to avoid Dan having to go to prison in upcoming episodes.
‘After talking to Amelia he thinks on it and thinks on it again, and he just thinks there’s no way out of this,’ Liam Fox explained to us. ‘He can’t stand the thought of not being with his daughter and his granddaughter. He realises that he’s not going to be suited to prison life at all. So the only option at that point seems to be he’s going to go on the run.’
Dan knows he’s going to need some help in organising this so he goes to Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), who’s been supporting him ever since the fateful day he punched Lloyd.

Liam described the scenes between his character and Cain as they come up with a plan.
‘There’s some lovely stuff with Cain and Dan,’ he commented. ‘There’s been a lot of stuff with Cain and Dan where he always seems like he’s been bullied by him over the years, but in this storyline he’s a real help to him. He knows that Dan’s going to struggle to cope with prison and he wants to help him out. Cain kind of thinks it’s probably not a good idea for him to run away but he does his best to help set him up so he can get out, and supports him. He sets him up with this car, sets him up with a contact over in Ireland and sets him on his way.’
Cain organises ferry tickets and a burner phone as well as the car, full of misgivings because he knows it’s a dangerous course of action for Dan but knowing how scared his friend is of going to prison.
It’s also hugely risky for Cain to get involved with helping a convicted criminal go on the run. Because of his own criminal record and the fact that he’s Dan’s work colleague and friend, the police are likely to ask him questions first as soon as Dan fails to appear for sentencing. Cain could face jail himself if his part in the escape is uncovered.
As Dan and Amelia head off, leaving Emmerdale behind them, could they have just made the whole situation worse for themselves – and for Cain?
