Caleb leaps to defend Nicky and Gabby as he confronts furious Kim in Emmerdale

Following the revelation that nanny Nicky (Lewis Cope) and Gabby (Rosie Bentham) are in a relationship in Emmerdale – and Nicky’s shock proposal that means the pair are now engaged – Kim Tate (Claire King) continued to seethe in Tuesday (April 4)’s episode.

And nobody does seething quite like Kim Tate. When Gabby remarked that ‘other people’s joy really grates on you,’ Kim replied, ‘Joy is here today, gone tomorrow. It’s stupidity that grates.’ Ouch. No wonder Nicky told Gabby later that Kim ‘terrifies’ him.

Luckily he had a slightly less terrifying prospect coming up – lunch with Gabby’s mothers, Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) and Bernice (Samantha Giles).

Nicky is still something of a mystery generally – he’s still the nanny with no surname on the end credits and we don’t know a lot about him, so maybe Laurel and Bernice would be able to do a bit of digging and offer up some clues about the enigma behind the ever-present smile.

As he was quizzed about his parents, did Nicky slip up slightly? He said his mum died when he was 15 but a few seconds later said ‘My mam is beautiful,’ quickly corrected to ‘Was beautiful.’ Yes, it’s quite normal to speak of a departed loved one in the present tense, but in the absence of any more clues we’re going to have to take that and the fact that Nicky didn’t mention much about his father as evidence that he’s a bit shifty.

The happy lunch was disrupted by the arrival of Kim, who was at the Woolpack for a drink with Caleb (William Ash). She told him about Gabby getting engaged to ‘that ridiculous babysitter’ and Caleb said Nicky seemed ‘like a decent lad.’ He tried to stop her from confronting the happy couple, but she ignored him and went over to have a go at Gabby.

As she suggested that Nicky could have half a dozen bodies buried between Emmerdale and Blackpool (‘I’ve never been to Blackpool’ said Nicky), Caleb was looking on – and Kim was furious when she discovered that he’d already known about Gabby and Nicky’s relationship. She told him he’d crossed a line meddling in her business.

As the happy couple and the mums toasted Gabby and Nicky’s happiness, Caleb looked at Kim warily.

Was he simply concerned that she was trying to destroy a lovely new romance? Or, if fan theories about a connection between the suave businessman and the chirpy nanny are correct, was he concerned that his real agenda might be about to be exposed?
