Carol Vorderman and James May engaged in an awkward head-to-head over who is older in scenes that aired during Thursday’s episode of Lorraine.

The former Countdown whiz, who is standing in for Lorraine Kelly after she tested positive for Covid, sat down with The Grand Tour host to chat about his new Prime Video series Our Man In Italy.

However, their conversation soon came to a standstill when they clashed on their ages.

James, 59, remarked that he was useless at canoe polo because he is ‘old’ which initially sparked the collision.

‘You’re not old!’ Carol, 61, quipped, to which James responded: ‘I’m pretty old.’

‘No you’re not,’ Carol continued, with the former Top Gear host insisting he is older than her. ‘No you’re not!’ she said again.

‘I’m sorry,’ the presenter interjected, as she seemingly had grown tired of the back and forth. ‘We could sit here for half an hour going “I am”, “I’m not”, “I am”.’

Looking down the lens, James insisted: ‘I’m older’.

And thankfully although he was wrong, that marked the end to their toing and froing.

Now that it’s officially settled that James is three years younger than Carol, viewers can get excited to see him jet off to Italy in his new Prime Video series launching tomorrow (July 15).

The host will travel from Palermo to the Dolomites and will explore everything it has to offer from food to culture and sport.

‘For James, Italy has always felt like a country that doesn’t seem to make sense,’ the official synopsis teases.

‘On the one hand, Italy is often regarded to be on the cutting edge – of science, fashion, and engineering, yet its economic infrastructure has fallen on very hard times. Somehow, though, Italy and the Italians always prevail.’

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
