On Friday, Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond welcomed Gyles Brandreth and Carol Vorderman on to This Morning for a special segment about romance. As they answered calls from viewers who were longing for love, Carol opened up about her personal experiences with relationships.

Just before Gyles and Carol spoke to those who wanted advice in looking for love, the duo shared their varied experiences.

Speaking on his marriage, Gyles shared: “I have been blessed in knowing my then girlfriend, now wife, for 54 years.

“We met on June 6 1968, and next summer we’ll celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary.

“There have been rollercoasters, but that’s my line of life,” pointing to Carol, he added: “Your line of life has been different.”

To which, Carol confirmed: “It has been different, I’ve been married twice, the first one was not happy, the second one was very happy, and then it ended.

“I’m a great believer in chapters in life, and some are extended chapters and some aren’t.”

Carol added: “I’ve found, as I said last time, which had a massive response from women, that I now, in the last 10 years or so have lived a very freer life where I have special friends.”

“I am not looking for one person,” she concluded.

Dermot stated: “And this is what qualifies both of you to give advice.”

As the episode continued, Alison, Dermot, Carol and Gyles heard from women who wanted advice on how to meet people.

Where others had no luck on dating apps, Gyles suggested joining a club in the community to meet like-minded people.

Carol helped another caller who longed for a partner and was told to trash the idea of “the one,” and find the one for right now.

Alison also offered up advice for a viewer who felt insecure about her weight.

The host encouraged the caller as she joked about those who secretly desire the “extra jelly.”

Earlier this month, Carol sparked excitement from Alison and Dermot when she revealed she had special friends.

During the phone-in segment, she admitted: “I live my life in chapters and this chapter since I was about 50, so for the last decade or so, I’ve lived a life that is much freer, I’ve never felt freer.”

The former Countdown host praised younger generations for having a “freer approach to sexuality” before advising the caller to consider dating women of different ages.

After Gyles disagreed, he suggested the caller should “find someone roughly the same age,” as yourself.

Carol went on a rant and hit back: “This is a time to break this nonsense taboo, which is that a person should only be looking for one person that satisfies everything in their life.”

Prying into her love life, Dermot asked: “How many special friends does your diary permit?”

“And do all your special friends know about it?” Alison asked before Dermot added: “Are they special friends to each other?”

“No, they don’t know each other,” Carol replied. “But they know about each other because it’s a very honest relationship.”

This Morning airs on ITV on weekdays at 10am.
