Charity makes huge decision about Mack as she confronts Chloe in Emmerdale

Was it a moment of madness or was it two people following their hearts when Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) and Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) slept together before Reuben’s christening in Emmerdale?

That was the question both of them were grappling with during Thursday (August 24)’s episode, as the christening took place.

Beforehand a guilty Mackenzie had sought out Moira (Natalie J. Robb) and told her what had happened. He admitted he didn’t know what he wanted: while Charity was the only person who’d ever really got him, being with Chloe (Jessie Elland) felt like ‘shelter in a hurricane.’

Moira was in no doubts. If he chose Charity, he’d probably lose Reuben. Either way, she told him, he needed to decide and then stick with his decision.

Back at the Woolpack Charity also needed someone to confide in and she talked to Chas (Lucy Pargeter), who can see right through Charity and didn’t believe her when she said the encounter with Mack hadn’t meant anything. Chas had some advice for her: ‘Don’t leave yourself with any regrets.’ Charity told Chas that she wanted to give things with Mackenzie another go.

Mackenzie continued to waver throughout the day. During the christening service in the church he told Chloe that he loved her, but was it real or was he trying to convince himself?

When he sought out Charity at the Woolpack later he was under orders from Moira to tell her that there was no future for them and he loved Chloe. That’s not how things turned out, though. Once he and Charity started talking it wasn’t long before he was describing them as the A Team, a reference to their wedding.

Who knows what would have happened next if Chas hadn’t walked in at that moment? As it was, Mack returned to the christening party and Charity returned to gazing at him from behind the bar.

Then Chloe made a speech and Mack joined in. Having apparently decided that his future was going to be with Chloe he called her his rock.

‘You and Reuben mean everything to me,’ he said. ‘I’m the luckiest man in the world.’

Watching this public display of affection, Charity was disgusted and walked out. Moira followed her. Charity was furious, saying that Mack had picked her up then tossed her aside as it suited him. ‘He can’t treat me like this!’ she insisted.

‘Don’t do anything stupid,’ Moira implored her.

Charity refused to listen. ’Maybe Chloe’s got a right to know what her precious boyfriend gets up to when she’s not around,’ she said, and threw Moira out before she could object further.
