On Wednesday’s instalment of Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley spoke to former royal press sec Ed Perkins. The discussion comes after Buckingham Palace announced the new monarch’s coronation will take place on May 6 next year. However, with this being the same day as Archie’s birthday, Ed suggested this could be an opportunity to bring the family together.

Buckingham Palace recently revealed that His Majesty King Charles III’s coronation will take place on May 6 next year at Westminster Abbey.

Conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the ceremony will see the new monarch crowned alongside Camilla, Queen Consort, nearly eight months after ascending the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

With the coronation reportedly set to be a more slimmed-down occasion than the Queen’s in 1957, the guest list is expected to be down from 8,000 to 2,000.

However, it’s unclear whether those guests will include his youngest son Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle as the coronation falls on the same day as their son Archie’s birthday

Discussing this on Good Morning Britain, Susanna asked former royal press sec Ed Perkins if this was done deliberately to entice the whole family together.

He replied: “Yeah it’s either a clash or an opportunity and they’ve only got 365 days to choose from.

“My recollection from when I was at the palace is that people used to make an awful lot of clashes. The truth is, it’s got to be held someday and there are dozens if not hundreds of national and royal events.”

Richard then highlighted the bombshell book that Harry is writing along with the Netflix documentary as he questioned whether or not they’ll attend the coronation at all.

Ed replied: “I don’t know, five weeks ago because of the sad events we weren’t even talking about what was going on in seven months time.

“The idea that anyone at this stage understands whether Harry and Meghan will attend I’ll take with a great pinch of salt.”

The Good Morning Britain host added that as Harry has reportedly dissed his father in the upcoming biography, surely he wouldn’t be there to see him crowned King.

Ed continued: “Well, there’s seven months still to go, there’s a lot of water to run under that bridge yet and opportunities may yet arise.

“We’ll have to see, I think anyone who says that they know they won’t attend is a big pinch of salt I’d say.”

Elsewhere in the discussion, the presenters spoke more about the concept of a slimmed-down coronation and what the nation may expect to see.

Along with a cut-down guest list, Charles is expected to ditch the royal gowns and opt for a less formal approach which will see people in suits and regular dresses.

Richard informed viewers that the ceremony may also be cut down from three hours to one, the same length as his mother’s funeral.

Although there are some traditions that will be seen on the day such as arriving in the gold state coach with the sceptre and orb.

However, Susanna slammed the idea of Charles ditching the royal gowns and choosing to have a less formal approach to the occasion.

She swiped: “We don’t want to see the King looking like he’s turning up for a day at an office!”

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays on ITV at 6am.
