Coronation Street exit after Bernie Winter misses Paul’s last Christmas

Coronation Street: Paul struggles to lift his wine glass

Coronation Street’s Bernie Winter (played by Jane Hazlegrove) could be set to land herself in some legal trouble as she attempts to help Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) find money for his homecare equipment.

Official ITV spoilers reveal that in upcoming scenes, Paul confirms he’s applied for the PIP but it will take 11 weeks.

Bernie is horrified for her son and wonders how he and Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) will cope until then.

Coming up with a plan, Bernie meets with Big Garth (Victor McGuire) and asks him to flog the rest of their gear at a knockdown price as she desperately needs money.

In the precinct, Big Garth hands Bernie a wad of cash but unbeknown to them a police officer takes photos.

As Bernie heads home, she’s arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods, leaving her family confused.

Later, Abi Franklin (Sally Carman) reveals that Joseph Brown (William Flanagan) is in A&E, and Bernie wonders how much more bad news they can all take.

Feeling responsible, Bernie unburdens herself to Abi, blaming herself for Paul’s condition because she was such a terrible Mum.

Will Bernie be able to get away with a caution from the police or is this just the start of a turbulent Christmas for the family?

Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod recently opened up about what is to come for the family and delivered some bad news.

“The Christmas catastrophe arrives from Bernie when she is involved with Shelly’s slightly dubious online scamming.

“It puts her in a massive amount of legal hot water to the extent that there is every likelihood that she is not going to be present for what will be Paul’s last Christmas.

“It is classic Winter/Brown schemes and scamming and Bernie is very much being Bernie through it all and overlaid with this knowledge.

“They don’t talk about it a lot but it is overlaid with his tragic last Christmas news and that the family might not actually be together for this one last festive moment.

“What we have tried to do is make it realistic and bittersweet as much as we could and fitting funny, but fairly poignant last Christmas for Paul.”

Could an exit be on the cards for Bernie if she ends up in prison?

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
