Coronation Street star unrecognisable after dowdy makeover for new serial killer show role | The Sun

CORONATION Street Katherine Kelly traded her wavy tresses for a curly wig on set of a new serial killer drama.

The Becky McDonald actress looked worlds away from her cobbles character as she plays a victim of the notorious Yorkshire Ripper.

Katherine, 42, transformed into Emily Jackson, the second known victim of serial killer, Peter Sutcliffe – better known as the Yorkshire Ripper.

Sporting a tartan coat and white knee-high boots, Katherine was spotted on the set of the ITV drama, The Long Shadow.

She was joined on set in Leeds by actress Sorcha Groundsell, believed to be playing fellow sex worker Maria Sellars.

Along with other female extras playing sex workers they filmed a scene showingMaria – one of the last people to see Emily alive – telling Emily to step forward into the light so she could be seen better by potential clients.

Cameras rolled as a car stopped on the opposite side of the road and picked up a blonde woman before driving off.

Later in the shoot, Katherine was approached by a man on foot who startled her as he walked up behind her and they spoke for a bit before she led him into a small side street.

In another scene, the two women were standing on the side of the road as a Land Rover pulled up.

Katherine's Emily who was 42 at the time of her death, was told to speak to the driver and then got into his car.

Sutcliffe went on to stab Emily 52 times in 1976 after driving around half a mile to derelict buildings on Enfield Terrace in the Manor Industrial Estate and killing her.

David Morrissey, an actor better known for playing good guys and hero cops in previous dramas, will play the former West Yorkshire Assistant Chief Constable in the drama.

A TV insider said: “The victims and their families still blame Oldfield and many of his senior colleagues for not catching Sutcliffe earlier.

“If he had been arrested sooner then fewer women would have been attacked and fewer lives ruined.

“So casting someone who is not known for playing baddies or villains is something of a revelation.”

David is about to appear on screens next week as another cop, DCS Ian St Clair, trying to solve a murder in BBC1’s Sherwood.

“He has previously played DI Thorne in Sky drama Thorne and DI Mal Craig in BBC1’s Five Days, series two.

Sutcliffe was found guilty of murdering 13 women and attempting to murder seven others across the North of England between 1975 and 1980.

At one point, the inquiry was wrongly focused on a man with a Wearside accent after police were led off track by a hoaxer.

During the investigation, Sutcliffe was interviewed and let go nine times.

Oldfield never responded to the waves of criticism before his death in 1985.

The Long Shadow, which is filming at the moment with Katherine and Daniel Mays – playing her husband Sydney – also in the cast, is due to air later this year or early in 2023.

Katherine became a household name when she joined the cast of Coronation Street and made her debut in 2006, before leaving in 2012.

During her time on Corrie she played Becky McDonald, who was married to the pub landlord Steve.

Becky's notable storylines included her drunken rampages, two miscarriages and her desire to adopt a child.

Since leaving Corrie, Katherine has been in demand.

She has had roles in some major TV series including Happy Valley, Cheat, Liar and the Night Manager.

Katherine appeared on Celebrity Bake Off in April 2022.
