Corrie fans gutted as beloved cobbles business set to close after 63 years

Coronation Street viewers are in a panic as the future of the Rovers Return hangs in the balance.

The pub has been the top meeting spot for Weatherfield residents for 63 years and has been the scene of more dramas and bust-ups than can be counted.

But with landlady Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) struggling to make ends meet there is talk of it being sold to property developers and the site turned into flats.

Fans of the ITV soap have said they are gutted about the storyline and that the cobbles just wouldn't be the same without the much-loved pub.

Many have flocked to Twitter to beg for something to be done.

“We must save the Rovers Return!” one tweeted.

“Annie Walker will be turning in her grave if it’s turned into flats.”

“Not even an action line to call if you've been affected by the potential closure of the Rovers Return – ITV you have a duty of care here!!!” joked another.

“Corrie isn’t Corrie without the Rovers Return,” said another dismayed fan.

Others suggested the potential closure might spark a campaign like the one to “Free The Weatherfield One” in 1998, which saw newspapers and politicians weighing in when Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride) was jailed for fraud.

“I feel another 'Free Deirdre' coming on with @itvcorrie but this time it’s ‘Save the Rovers Return’ – you cannot shut that pub!” one tweeted.

“You know when Deirdre went to prison and the general public took the story line to government – I can see a petition being drawn up to save the Rovers Return,” said someone else.

Some fans of the soap also had ideas about how the boozer could save a few pennies.

One quipped: “The big storyline on Coronation Street at the minute is that the Rovers Return is losing money.

"I'm no economic expert but that might have something to do with the four bar staff they currently have working the same shift.”
