Dan Walker has jumped to the defence of Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, after they were seen holding hands at Westminster Hall, stressing that the Prince is ‘probably not having the best week’.
Today, members of the royal family took part in a procession as Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin was transported from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall, where it will lie in state until her funeral on Monday.
The Queen’s children – King Charles III, the Princess Royal and Princes Andrew and Edward – walked alongside one another, with Princes William and Harry and the late monarch’s eldest grandson, Peter Phillips, behind them.
The Princess of Wales, the Queen Consort, the Duchess of Sussex and and the Countess of Wessex followed in a cortege, before Harry, Meghan, William and Kate were all captured entering the historic Parliamentary building.
Harry and Meghan held hands while inside Westminster Hall and outdoors, a fact that one critic of the couple took umbrage with on Twitter.
‘Why the **** do #HarryandMegan have to hold hands when leaving Westminster Hall?’ they asked, a question that Channel 5 news presenter Dan had a very simple answer to.
‘I think his grandmother may have just died Sandy! He’s probably not having the best week,’ he responded directly.
Several Twitter users piped up to express their agreement with Dan, with one telling the former BBC Breakfast star: ‘Well said Dan. As soon as I saw it I knew someone would make hateful comments.’
‘No snarky comments about Zara and Mike Tindall holding hands too I note!!’ someone else noted.
One individual shared that at the funeral of their 101-year-old nan earlier this year, their wife holding their hand was a ‘huge comfort’ to them.
Another person recalled how emotional it was to see Harry as a child walk behind the coffin of his mother, the late Princess Diana, at her funeral, as they tweeted: ‘Needed a hug I’d say, I felt emotional for him, reminded me of the little boy walking behind his mum’s coffin, well done Meghan.’
