Former companions Ace (played by Sophie Aldred) and Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) are returning to screens this Sunday after a more than 30-year absence from Doctor Who. At The Power of the Doctor’s preview screening ahead of its anticipated release on BBC One this Sunday, Sophie revealed she was incredibly emotional when she was requested to return.
Sophie admitted she immediately started crying after hanging up from a conversation with Doctor Who bosses.
Her return alongside Janet was confirmed in April of this year, and classic fans were thrilled to see their favourite companions return to the TARDIS.
Ahead of this Sunday’s special episode, the last for current Time Lord Jodie Whittaker, Sophie recalled the initial conversation with her agent about being asked to return.
“Well, my agent called and said, ‘Andy Pryor has been in touch – the casting director for Doctor Who – for your availability’,” she said.
“‘And we all know what that means!’ And I ended the phone call and just burst into tears.”
The hit sci-fi series has frequently brought back former Doctors, including David Tennant returning for a second time next year, but it’s rarer to see old companions back in the TARDIS.
Long-serving companion Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen) returned on several occasions and even led to her own series on CBBC.
However, The Power of the Doctor will be the first time the Doctor has reunited with companions from the classic series for more than 10 years.
Sophie continued: “It was, I think, the call all of us have been waiting for all these years.
“And then I had a Zoom with Chris [Chibnall, showrunner], and you said, ‘Would you do me the great honour of doing this?’
The actress was clearly stunned to be asked back and leapt at the opportunity to return along with Janet.
Specific details about their comeback are being kept under wraps, but the companions will return to aid the Doctor in her latest bout against the Master (Sacha Dhawan), the Daleks and the Cybermen.

“Wild horses wouldn’t stop me!” Sophie exclaimed. “It was just amazing.”
At the episode’s premiere, Janet paid tribute to the show’s dedicated cast and crew for making them both feel so welcome.
“Everybody was so sweet,” she said. “The crew were so lovely.”
And Sophie added: “The crew, the cast, and Jodie, you were the leader of this and Mandip [Gill] as well, the welcome we got was absolutely extraordinary.”
“Jamie [Magnus Stone, director] was absolutely brilliant, as well, at welcoming us.
“And we just had the best, best time. Coming back together this evening, it’s like we’re mates and we were only there for a few days.
“But it was such a warm, welcoming, wonderful atmosphere, just like it used to be in the old days. It was really lovely.”
The BBC is keeping spoilers for the upcoming episode close to the chest, but The Power of the Doctor could very well end with the opportunity for Ace and Tegan to make further appearances.
