It came during Friday’s instalment of the ITV news programme when Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey joined Kate Garraway and Adil Ray to discuss his thoughts on what should happen now that Prime Minster Liz Truss has resigned after only 44 days in Downing Street. As the MP called for a general election, Garraway seemed dismissive of the idea, leading viewers to ask for her to be taken “off the telly,” as they backed arguments for an election and questioned the Good Morning Britain host’s opinions.

Garraway told Davey: “I guess the problem, and I’ve got to be honest, [is that] absolutely unanimously, we have had comments from people saying, ‘Yes, we need a general election, we need one now’ so far already this morning.

“But I suppose the negative of that would be that rather like during the war, when they thought, ‘This is not a time for a big campaign, not a time for, you know, political parties pushing themselves and debating and all of that.’

“This is a time of great economic crisis and frankly terror for many people across the country as we approach winter.

“A general election would again put everything on hold, wouldn’t it?”

“Well, the reality is the instability in our economy and the pain for millions of families and pensioners is coming from the political instability In the Conservative Party,” Davey argued.

“The Conservative Party is totally divided. There are factions who literally cannot agree with each other.

“They’re fighting each other. We saw it in the lobby.”

Later, Garraway again added: “You’ve been very clear, haven’t you and you’ve said, ‘We need a general election.'”

“Yeah, I think many people feel that,” the opposition leader responded.

“We’ve seen Liz Truss trashing the British economy with her unfunded tax cuts.

“Then before that, we saw Boris Johnson failing our country with his lies and his lawbreaking.

“The Conservatives have shown they’re not fit to govern our wonderful country.

“And we don’t need another Prime Minster lurching from crisis to crisis, we need some stability.

“Millions of families and pensioners are struggling. They need proper leadership.

“That’s why I think there should be a general election and frankly, Conservative MPs should do their patriotic duty and work with opposition parties like the Liberal Democrats to make that general election possible.”

Seeming unconvinced, Garraway commented: “So you think patriotic duty because it will then democratically give us, the people who are outside of Westminster, a chance to actually vote on who’s leaving the country?”

Many people watching the interview fumed at Garraway’s apparent reluctance for an election.

Twitter user @WeareLiverpoolP raged: “Get Kate Garraway off telly we need a general election what more can this Tory government get wrong? ‘Let’s just leave them as a general election will take’ time f*** right off people will die #GMB.” (sic)

Responding to the tweet, @Cherrieschapel agreed, adding: “What a weird attitude. We deserve better.”

An enthusiastic @mcfadzean_neil responded under Good Morning Britain’s Twitter post: “GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW GENERAL ELECTION NOW.”

@joegallagher57 asked: “#gmb why, if the Tories told the King she has no mandate to run the country shouldn’t the King dissolve Parliament and order a General Election?”

“#gmb Obviously Kate not keen on a general election,” @Andrewbunchlfc remarked.

@SPascoalLima shared: “No other democracy keeps on electing PMs without a General Election! It’s no wonder the conservatives get away with what they do. The World is watching. We deserve better than this.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
