But what has Shane been up to since his time away from Albert Square?

The actor has balanced a hugely successful 40-year career between theatre, film and TV, and he has been a regular fixture on prime time television hosting such shows as The Shane Richie Experience and Don't Forget the Lyrics.

As the nation prepares to welcome him back to soap land, Dai;y Star has taken a look at his colourful life.

Losing his virginity

The I’m A Celebrity star took full advantage of his golden boy status during the peak of his fame.

But he had a way with the ladies before finding fame and enjoyed a host of sexual exploits while working as a Bluecoat at Pontins aged 16.

The now 58-year-old star revealed he lost his virginity at age 12 with his brother’s babysitter.

He said: "It was a big year for me – 1977. I finally did it. I was almost 13. The lucky (or unlucky) girl was my younger brother Dean's babysitter, a lovely girl called Kim Broad.

"Dean was in bed and Kim was sitting in the dark watching The Creature From The Black Lagoon. When I walked in, she said: 'I'm a little bit scared, Shane. Will you come and sit next to me?'"

He went on to say that he cozied up to her on the tiny sofa when she put her arm around him and asked if he’d ever “done it” before.

“She started kissing me and the next thing I knew, I was naked and so was she.

"It was all over in minutes. Not that I cared. I couldn't wait to get to school the next day and tell my mates I'd actually had sex."

Sex in car with Coleen

Loose Women star Coleen Nolan recalled a steamy sex session she shared with ex-husband Shane Richie during a candid interview with Piers Morgan.

The opinionated talk show host kicked off the interview by bringing up some of the biggest revelations she's shared on Loose Women over the years.

Coleen and Shane met in 1986 and planned to marry in a huge ceremony in 1990.

Piers said: "You once told viewers about an experience you had in an NCP car park with your ex-husband.

Coleen replied: "We were in a car park in Birmingham. We were young and we just met.

"We were very into each other and we just didn't waste the opportunity.

"There was no one in the car park. We did we what young people do and luckily the windows steamed up because when we finished the whole car park was full.”

Despite their passionate affair, the couple split in 1997 when she discovered he had been cheating. They share two sons Shane Jnr, 33 and Jake 29.

Wild orgy

His car romp with ex-Colleen wasn’t Shane’s first wild sex escapade. He once also spoke out about a 7-in-a-orgy he shared.

Shane said he "was in heaven" when he worked at Pontins as he claims when girls came on holiday they always lusted after Bluecoats.

And he told how one encounter with six girls he met at the camp led to him having a seven-in-a-bed romp.

He said: "We went back to their chalet. I'd had my eye on one of the girls all night, so we went off on our own. We were kissing

"I was quite happily taking it in turn to kiss these two girls when one of them said: 'My friend wants you to kiss her, too.'"

"I couldn't believe it – three! I walked into the other room to kiss her friend – and all four of them were sitting there naked. and cuddling when suddenly I realised there was another girl on the bed. I thought, 'This is good, my first time with two girls!'"

He went on to say that were smoking a joint and drinking wine when the two girls started kissing each other. The next thing he knew he was “being passed around from girl to girl”

"The next morning I woke up and realised I'd been used and spat out the other end. But guess what? I'd loved every minute of it."

Wearing dresses

Away from Walford, multi-talented star Shane kept fans entertained on stage becoming a much-loved panto veteran.

He has starred in a number of musicals and theatre productions since shooting to fame in 1977.

Last year he starred in Wimbledon Theatre's production of Dick Whittington, but has also played parts other shows such as Cinderella and Aladdin.

Shane co-wrote and co-produced the national UK tour of Boogie Nights which went on to a sell-out season at The Savoy Theatre in London's West End. Film roles include Macbeth, The Reverend and Prisoners of the Sun.

He appeared on the twentieth series of I'm a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here and finished in fourth place.

Richie also tried his hand at presenting, fronting a number of BBC game shows including Reflex, Win Your Wish List and Decimate.

EastEnders return

Alfie first rocked up to Albert Square back in 2002 and made his last appearance in 2019.

The BBC confirmed Shane’s return to EastEnders as part of an autumn trailer for the BBC One series, where the unexpected surprise occurs during the final planning for Kat Slater and Phil Mitchell's wedding.

And the star is looking forward to his comeback. He said of his return: "It's an absolute honour and privilege to be asked back to my TV home of Albert Square.
