EastEnders boss reveals reason why now is the right time to bring Alfie back

EastEnders boss Chris Clenshaw revealed that bringing Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) back for Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) and Phil Mitchell’s (Steve McFadden) wedding day was an inevitability.

The producer, who has implemented some welcomed changes since taking the reins, discussed Alfie’s comeback back during a chat with Metro.co.uk and other press, branding him the ‘love of Kat’s life’ – and we couldn’t agree more.

‘It was inevitable’, he said. ‘Phil and Kat are together. Alfie is the love of Kat’s life, we had to bring him back and the right moment to bring him back was on their wedding day.’

Cue the drama.

Kat and Phil, as viewers know, started dating over a year ago, after a series of one night stands led to romance.

The partnership has received a mixed response from audiences, with some fans arguing that Kat would never have considered Phil partner material given his hard-man ways.

But the couple are all set to tie the knot in the coming weeks, which is when Alfie Moon – Kat’s actual soulmate – stages his long-awaited comeback, just in time to try and convince Kat that she’s making a huge mistake.

Kat, hun. Listen to him.

Viewers will just have to wait and see if Alfie’s plan to win Kat’s affection pays off, but show boss Chris, who is a huge fan of the character, told us that fans can expect to see the ‘loveable rogue’ iteration of Alfie back on our screens – the one we all know and love.

Music to our ears.

‘Alfie makes a lot of mistakes but he’s always got good intentions,’ said Chris, who reiterated his love for Alfie by telling us that even if Kat and Phil had not been tying the knot, he would’ve found another way to bring the character back.

We love that.

‘I’m very fond of Alfie,’ he said. ‘He’s an iconic character, it’s 20 years [since his debut] this year. November this year.

‘I think I said this to Shane months ago, 20 years ago when I watched Alfie pop up on screen, I watched with my mum and sister, and my dad in the corner wearing his red top.

My dad was a market trader – bit of a Del Boy very much like Alfie. We were shouting at my dad saying: “It’s you, it’s you!”. I’ve always had such a connection to Alfie.”
