Fans of EastEnders have been left raging by a major schedule change ahead of Cindy Beale's highly-anticipated return to the Square.

Monday night's episode (August 21) was supposed to see Cindy make her comeback however it was cancelled to make way for the World Athletics Championships.

Cindy's epic return will now be shown tonight (August 22) on BBC One instead.

But the sudden change left a number of viewers furious as they headed over to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their grievances.

One annoyed fan penned: "It's really is frustrating when #EastEnders schedule gets hijacked. Completely unnecessary given how many free-to-view channels there are available."

While another fumed: "What do you mean there is no EastEnders tonight?"

However, the change in schedule also caused trouble among fans who tuned in to watch the episode after it went live on BBC iPlayer early.

This impacted those who were saving it to watch live on TV tonight, as they came across spoilers online.

One viewer took to social media and wrote: "Thank you to everyone who has not shared spoilers for tonight's #EastEnders on the timeline."

Due to the World Athletics Championships, EastEnders will only be aired twice this week. After tonight's episodes, the next instalment of the popular soap will be on Thursday.

However, the BBC will air a double bill of episodes making them one hour long and episodes will still be released on iPlayer as usual on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6am.

As well as Cindy (Michelle Collins), her ex-husband Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) and their son Peter (Thomas Law) will also be making their returns.

Talking about his character's comeback, Thomas commented: "It was easier in a way because they wanted to show a more mature and put-together side of Peter this time around.

"I played Peter for such a long time so I felt like I really knew him but Adam [Woodyatt] and Michelle [Collins] made it easy for me to get back into the role too, as I had to harness onto the fact that Peter just really loves his mum and dad.

That was pretty easy for me to do because I do love them both. That's not to say that I wasn't nervous on the first day on set but all my nerves went away when I started to work with them."
