EastEnders return date set for iconic character as soap confirms fireworks

EastEnders: Cindy returns to Albert Square

The return of EastEnders legend Cindy Beale (played by Michelle Collins) to Walford has been on the cards for a while, and now the BBC soap has confirmed a date.

It was revealed Cindy was in fact alive back in June, but she has yet to return to Walford.

A new trailer has revealed Cindy will set foot in Albert Square for the first time in 26 years on Monday, August 28.

Her ex, Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) won’t be far behind as he arrives the next day after a few years away from Walford.

In a preview, Cindy can be seen standing at Walford station as she says in a voice-over: “I’ve wanted to visit for so long.”

She then gives Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) the shock of her life by coming up behind her and saying: “Hello, Kathy.”

“You’re dead…” a baffled Kathy responds as she glares at Cindy.

Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) is later talking to Ian in the teaser, telling him: “Cindy always did have a way of pulling the wool over people’s eyes.”

“It’s different now,” Ian argues back before Kathy can be heard fuming: “She creates unhappiness and confusion everywhere she goes.”

“It feels good being back in Walford, feels like I’m coming home,” Cindy then comments.

The clips also show her daughters, Gina Knight (Francessca Henry) and Anna Knight (Molly Rainford) gleefully getting ready to celebrate the latter’s 21st birthday.

To add to the twist, it turns out Cindy has been in witness protection for decades and at one point she’d assumed a new identity.

That’s when she had a family with Walford newbie George Knight (Colin Salmon), who she has no idea currently lives in The Vic with Gina and Anna.

Her daughters believed their mum was called Rose Knight and all they know is that she abandoned the family years ago.

An episode synopsis for August 28 reads: “After 25 years away, Cindy arrives back in the square, the Knights excitedly prepare for Anna’s surprise 21st birthday in the Vic, and there are fireworks as Kathy comes face to face with a ghost from her past.”

EastEnders continues on Tuesday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
