EastEnders Yolande star based soap character on late sister amid return claims

Angela Wynter has revealed the heartwarming inspiration behind her iconic EastEnders character Yolande Trueman.

The actress, who recently joined the cast of Doctors, played the bubbly and positive B&B owner and former wife of Minute Mart owner Patrick Trueman between 2003 and 2008.

But it turns out that Yolande was actually based on Angela’s real-life sister Merlene, who passed away.

In a touching tribute to her late sibling, Angela revealed that Yolande’s character outline was inspired by Merlene. “Yolande is based on my own late sister,” Angela explained.

“She's bubbly and positive, and she won Patrick over with her charm and her toughness. She's vulnerable, but she's principled.

"I wanted to honour my sister in some way," Angela revealed in a recent interview.

"Yolande's vulnerability and principled nature were inspired by Merlene's own qualities."

Angela’s portrayal of Yolande was a hit with fans, and her character’s relationship with Patrick kept viewers on the edge of their seats.

Although Yolande and Patrick have since gone their separate ways, Angela's powerful portrayal of the character has left a lasting impression on viewers.

Since leaving the BBC One soap, Angela has continued to make waves in the entertainment industry.

She joined the cast of Doctors last year, where she plays the role of Caribbean cafe owner Makeda Sylvester.

She has also acted in the hit mini-series Les Miserables and the film Last Christmas, starring alongside Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson.

Meanwhile, EastEnders fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Yolande to the show.

The beloved character hasn't been seen on Albert Square since 2017.

Soap sensation Patrick Trueman, played by Rudolph Walker, has been a mainstay in EastEnders since 2001, entertaining fans with his captivating storylines and unforgettable character.

Currently, he's living with Kim Fox, portrayed by Tameka Empson, whom he's taken under his wing as a father figure, and Denise Fox, played by the stunning Diane Parish.

But, according to sources, upcoming episodes of the beloved BBC soap will see Patrick missing his ex-wife Yolande.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the emotional reunion between the former lovers.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 7.30pm
