Emmerdale star addresses whether Mackenzie or Vanessa is Charity's true love

There has been much discussion over the years in regards to who Charity Dingle’s (Emma Atkins) one true love is, with Emmerdale fans often divided on the subject.

Like all longtime soap characters, Charity, who has been a mainstay of the ITV serial for over two decades, has had many a relationship, but one might argue that she’s only come close to happiness a handful of times.

The owner of The Woolpack boozer, as viewers know, recently tied the knot with Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb), believing that he’ boasts’s her best shot at true happiness, with the two possessing a unique chemistry that you’d think makes them perfect for one another.

Mackenzie, however, is set to break Charity’s heart next week, when the truth about his one-night-stand with Chloe Harris (Jessie Elland) is revealed, with his identity as baby Reuben’s father being exposed.

Charity is utterly crushed by the discovery, with discussion moving to whether or not the couple can make it past such a betrayal of trust.

This, of course, raises the question of whether Mackenzie was ever Charity’s one true love, or whether that honour belongs to someone else?

Vanesa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) says hello.

When asked whether it’s Mack or Vanessa who truly holds the keys to Charity’s heart, actress Emma Atkins branded the question a ‘really good’ one.

‘Vanessa was so morally upstanding and I think she met her match in Mackenzie in the sense that they were both a bit rebellious,’ she said. ‘You could say she needs both qualities, which is why she fell in love with both.

‘Vanessa’s probably good for her in a lot of ways, but then there is this level of the Charity and Cain thing, where they’re both a bit flawed, and she’s got that with Mackenzie.

‘They’ve both got stuff going on, both got issues. You often can gravitate to someone you recognise.

Emma said that Charity has ‘equal amounts’ of love for both Mack and Vanessa and that, ultimately, comparing the two is ‘pointless’.

‘I think she definitely fell in love with Vanessa because she felt a level of security she’d never experienced before,’ concluded the soap star. ‘But with Mackenzie there’s fun there. There’s mischief, and the more the relationship continued the deeper the love got.’

The love may have got deeper as Mackenzie and Charity’s romance went on, but the question is: will they be able to salvage what’s left of their marriage when the truth about the former’s betrayal is revealed?

Or is this well and truly the end of the road for the pair? That remains to be seen, but Emma was quick to defend Mackenzie, who has made an effort to try and do the right thing in recent weeks.

‘Mackenzie isn’t a rat-bag,’ insisted Emma.

‘He’s fully invested in Charity and he’s gone and made this terrible blunder and obviously wants to do right where Chloe’s concerned. I kind of feel for him. I do.’

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
