Emmerdale’s Jacob Gallagher actor pays tribute to departing ‘best friend’

Matthew Wolfenden cries on This Morning over his Emmerdale exit montage

Emmerdale star Joe-Warren Plant who plays Jacob Gallager in the ITV soap has paid tribute to Matthew Wolfenden who plays his on-screen stepfather David Metcalfe.

Father of three Matthew recently revealed that he was calling time on the character after nearly two decades and Joe-Warren, who has played his stepson since 2010 when he was just eight years old has admitted he is “gutted”.

“I’m gutted! I’ve learnt everything from him. I had no previous acting experience, so everything came directly from Matthew,” he confessed.

The young star admitted that he loved the way the character’s relationship had evolved now that he is an adult.

“It’s nice to see the change in conversations – everything’s a bit more grown-up and they talk more on a mature level,” he intimated.

“They’ve always got on, David’s a great father, but Jacob’s enjoying spending more time with David as a single dad,” he told Inside Soap.

Reflecting on life on set without Matthew he said: “It’s going to be strange not having him around!

“It’s sad, but we’ll keep in touch – he’s my best friend. Matthew’s the most genuine soul you could ever meet. I’ll miss him, for sure.”

Upcoming episodes are due to bring drama for the pair, as a careless mistake sees Jacob suffering a life-threatening allergic reaction.

David is naturally horrified and immediately goes all out to protect him.

Matthew has admitted to feeling apprehensive about leaving and recently spoke out about his trepidation on This Morning.

“Oh god, I’m so nervous about leaving. But… nearly 20 years, well, almost two decades,” he said. “It feels like the right time, yeah, the door’s left open, they’re not killing me off,” he revealed.

During his 17 years on the show, fans have seen David battling testicular cancer, almost die at the hands of the village murderer and he has had plenty of romantic dramas.

Matthew also met his wife Charley Webb on the show as she was playing  played Debbie Dingle when he joined the soap.

Reflecting on this, he said:  “You know what, I met my wife on the show and we’ve had three kids. Not only has it given me 18 years of an amazing job, it’s given me a family.”
