Emmerdale’s Marlon Dingle (played by Mark Charnock) and Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) won the best romance award at the Inside Soap Awards last month. Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mark teased that despite their strong marriage there will still be “hard times” ahead for the beloved couple.

Earlier this year, Marlon left Emmerdale fans in tears when he suffered a sudden stroke.

The fan favourite’s life was changed forever just after he became engaged to Rhona in a sweet double proposal.

In heartwarming scenes, Marlon married Rhona but Emmerdale star Mark has hinted that there will be trouble ahead for the couple.

He teased: “There’s so much history behind them I think the audience have seen that, they’ve invested in their ups and downs over the years.

“Given where they’ve been, they’ve been at the very worst place so I think we hope that they’ve got a strong [foundation] but you just never know.

“I think they’re going to continue to find life hard because of where they’re at.

“But they’ve got each other and they’re really good with each other.”

“They’ve found what they’re looking for,” the Emmerdale award winner said.

Reflecting on Marlon’s stroke, Mark stressed the importance of Rhona’s support.

He remarked: “I think it’s a game changer for him if he didn’t have that I’m not sure he would have made it.”

The fan favourite couple won the award for best romance at the Inside Soap Awards while Marlon’s stroke picked up best storyline.

The stalwart also won the award for best actor at the ceremony last month.

Mark continued: “It was romance born out of absolute tragedy.

“What’s fascinating about getting that award is the audience have obviously seen that it’s not a normal romance.

“It’s a woman trying to prop her man up quite literally and figuratively just trying to nurse him back to himself.

“I always think when he had the stroke he’s like an outline and she’s helping him sketch himself back in.”

“I think the audience have seen her commitment to him,” he added.

During the 50th anniversary storm week, Emmerdale fans watched as a scared Marlon felt helpless while Rhona was missing in the village.

Luckily, Rhona arrived home safely and the couple were reunited but unfortunately Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) and Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) were killed in the storm.

Emmerdale airs on ITV on weekdays at 7.30pm.
