Everything We Know About ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ Season 4

Real ones know that Disney+ doesn’t just have Marvel and Star Wars. Families and Disney adults alike have been enjoying season 1, season 2, and season 3 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, a totally charming YA series once you get past all the excessive punctuation. The show was Olivia Rodrigo’s pre–“Drivers License” breakout (and pre–“Drivers license” breakup), so the world really owes fans a thank you, IMHO. Is the show that put the singer-songwriter and It Girl on the map coming back for more? Here’s what East High Drama Club has in store.

First things first, *has* High School Musical: The Musical: The Series been renewed for season 4?

Yes! The series was renewed for a fourth season ahead of the third.

Will Olivia Rodrigo be back in season 4?

Probably not, TBH, but she might have a cameo. The actress/songwriting overnight sensation has a scaled-back role in season 3, which is already being called her character’s send-off, according to Entertainment Weekly—so I think she’s pretty much done.

What (and who) will season 4 be about?

Since season 3 took place over summer break, I think it’s safe to bet that season 4 will be about fall semester of the next year and whatever Miss Jenn has the Drama Club doing. What year is that, you ask, for many of our East High Drama Club? Senior year, baby! Ricky, Kortney, Big Red will all be seniors—as will Nini, if we do see her at all. EJ, as you may remember, technically graduated already. He was a senior in seasons 1 and 2. That said, Carlos, Seb, Ashlyn and Gina will all be juniors in season 4 and there are new characters from season 3 that could join.

No, I mean which *musical* will they do in season 4?

Well, how many Disney musicals are left? It kind of seems like East High only does musicals from the House of Mouse. (It is a Disney+ series, after all, so, like…I get it.) They’ve done High School Musical, Beauty and the Beast, and Frozen as well as songs from High School Musical 2 and Camp Rock.

Some of the remaining Disney musicals that have been adapted to the stage are The Lion King, The Little Mermaid (which North High almost did), The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, Aladdin, Mary Poppins, Newsies, and Aida—the last two would be my picks, FWIW. Sure, it’s fun to see the East High kids as DCOM and/or animated characters that we recognize, but I’d love to see some slightly deeper cuts.

When will HSM:TM:TS: be back for season 4?

This is probably one of the hardest things to predict, TBH. Season 1 aired on Disney+ between November 2019 and January 2020. Season 2 followed between May 2021 and July 2021, and season 3 got here a year later, airing between July 2022 and September 2022. It has hit every season. I would think that if it takes about year to make, the new season will premiere in the fall of 2023. But who knows?!
