A former Great British Bake Off contestant was told she should ‘know her place’ by viewers and trolls on social media.
Kimberley Wilson starred on the fourth series of the beloved Channel 4 baking competition, which saw her come runner-up to Frances Quinn.
After her stint on the show, the baker opened up about trolling and social media abuse she had received from viewers.
She said she was told: ‘I was too self-satisfied, I was too confident and cocky and I wasn’t showing enough vulnerability.
‘I wasn’t showing enough defence, I wasn’t being gracious enough. I read comments which said I should know my place. It felt political,’ she added to BBC Radio 2, according to The Sun.
‘What you got was a kind of condensed, slightly two-dimensional representation of what happened; nothing is fictionalised, but it’s not fully nuanced.’
As well as hitting back against the trolls, Kimberley also suggested that the way she had come across on the show wasn’t true to reality, saying she ‘was presented as kind of uber-confident and uber-competent, which is probably just not human.
‘People not liking you isn’t very nice, it wasn’t a pleasant experience.’
The 39-year-old also offered her tips for the upcoming contestants, after the opening episode of this series saw judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith welcome some new bakers into the iconic tent.
Who are the contestants in this year’s line-up?
The class of 2022 includes:
- Carol, 59, a supermarket cashier from Dorset
- Maisam, 18, a sales assistant from Cornwall
- Maxy, 29, an architectural assistant from London
- Kevin, 33, a music teacher Kevin is from Lanarkshire
- Sandro, 30, a nanny from London
- Syabira, 32, a cardiovascular research associate from London
- Dawn, 60, an IT manager from Bedfordshire
- James, 25, a nuclear scientist from Cumbria
- Janusz, 34, a personal assistant from East Sussex
- Abdul, 29, an electronics engineer from London
- Will, 45, a former charity director from London
- Rebs, 23, a Masters student from County Antrim
Speaking about getting onto the show, Kimberley highlighted the pretty intense process, which includes a 16-page application form with topics like kitchen disasters and your history in food, before an interview with producers.
‘t’s basically a clearing interview, where you bring something in, and they check whether you actually made the cake yourself or just bought it,’ Kimberley said.
‘They’re like, “So what was the recipe for that?”‘ before a screen test to check ‘whether you freeze on TV or not,’ and then a live test.
She continued: ‘You basically do a technical challenge, as like a little test before you’re on the show. In my year, Paul and Mary Berry judged it!’
The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
