The fall of House Targaryen still continues each week on HBO, and Game of Thrones fans have been thrilled by the expansion of the world of Westeros so far. Unfortunately, a strange detail in the third episode of the spin-off House of the Dragon’s first season has prompted some confused and furious reactions online.

Game of Thrones fans complained they were “taken out” of the drama by the inclusion of a pug in the latest episode of House of the Dragon.

In episode three, one of the ladies of the court brings her pet pug with her during the hunt in Kingswood.

Princess Rhaenyra (played by Milly Alcock) is talking with Alicent (Emily Carey) and, when her role in the kingdom is questioned by the same woman, she furiously retorts about what she has done for the realm besides eating cake.

If viewers were in any doubt of her dog’s breed, the camera cuts to a brief close-up of the now infamous pug on her lap licking up the remaining cake.

Fans couldn’t help but get distracted by the pug’s appearance in House of the Dragon’s mediaeval setting.

@ch0nny tweeted: “As a pug owner, this colliding of worlds was jarring.”

@yesenianais wrote: “I’ve read more than enough ‘criticism’ of some of the ‘unrealistic’ casting in HOTD, but if you ask me the most unrealistic part I’ve seen so far was that pug.”

“I know it’s a show about dragons and stuff but ain’t no way god damn pugs exist in the Game of Thrones universe,” @JackKennedy fumed.

@gabby_feliciano joked: “Dragons? Fine. but ain’t no way pugs existed back then.”

Redditor Yodude86 commented: “I’m not sure who made the final call to randomly throw a modern pug into this episode but I can’t stop laughing about it.”

And @ZacharyVanEpps tweeted: “Seeing the pug in House of the Dragon and thinking ‘how long before they edit that dog out like the Starbucks cup?'”

Some viewers have likened the pug’s appearance to the notorious coffee cup which snuck into the background of the final season of the flagship series.

This isn’t the first time dogs have appeared in Westeros, though, and the iconic direwolves played a key role in Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) tale in the original Game of Thrones.

However, many fans thought the short-statured, wrinkly-faced pug simply looked too modern to be included in a fantasy series based around medieval Europe.

Despite complaints, the appearance of a pug in ancient times is actually not so far-fetched as viewers believed based on its history.

Although they were brought to Europe from China in the 16th Century, early forms of pug were bred in ancient times for ruling families.

They remained a symbol of wealth and nobility up to the 20th Century when they were introduced to the United States and made their way into family homes.

Pugs have since become rather controversial, as breeding has led to shorter muzzles, shorter legs and susceptibility to health issues over time.

Even so, some Game of Thrones fans were clearly disappointed the dog made its way into the court of the Targaryens, the only family to gain the command of Westeros’ powerful dragons.

House of the Dragon continues Sundays on HBO in the USA and Sky Go and NOW the following Monday in the UK.
