Gogglebox star Jane Minty, who appears on the Channel 4 reality programme with her brother Simon, has come under fire for defending the Conservative Party on the latest instalment of the show. The episode highlighted Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng’s decision to ditch plans to cut the 45p rate of income tax after a revolt by Tory MPs hours before his Conservative Party conference speech. Many viewers were baffled as Jane defended the Chancellor, with some calling for her to be axed from the programme.

Gogglebox families were filmed reacting to the news of the Government dropping its plan to abolish the 45p top rate of income tax for the highest earners.

While many families criticised the Government over its sharp U-turn, Jane said she trusted the Conservative Party under Prime Minister Liz Truss’ leadership.

She said: “I do trust them as at least they can say, ‘I’ve made a mistake,’ at least they can say, ‘I’ve changed my mind.'”

Swarms of viewers took to Twitter following her comments, with Alex writing: “Trust the Tories? Are you okay hun? #Gogglebox.” (sic)

Angela Garrity fumed: “Honestly… ‘I trust them’. F**k off… Get off my TV #Gogglebox.” (sic)

@Racingfan21 added: “Ugh #gogglebox is becoming more of a Tory shill programme every week, that woman trusts them? I’m speechless.” (sic)

Gemma scoffed: “I’m sorry did she just say she trusts the Tories? @C4Gogglebox #gogglebox.”

TG said: “Jane trusting the Tories… #Gogglebox.” (sic)

Jane is usually a firm favourite with viewers due to her witty one-liners with Simon as they tune in to television shows.

Other Gogglebox stars, such as Sophie Sandiford, took swipes at the Chancellor’s last-minute change of mind.

She quipped: “I’m glad they have decided to U-turn as the pound has s**t its pants.”

Kwarteng said during the Conservative Party Conference it had become a “distraction”.

“We have a plan and we need to get on with it,” he stressed at the conference on Monday which was held in Birmingham.

Gogglebox’s Mary Killen told her husband Giles Wood: “You see, they wouldn’t have voted it through, that’s the problem.

“So rather than be defeated in the House of Commons, he withdrew it.”

“They had to change as they were having a revolt and lost,” Simon said as he watched a news report about the conference with Jane.

Jane and Simon made their first appearance on Gogglebox in 2021, and have made regular appearances ever since.

When she is not appearing on Gogglebox, Jane works in a kitchen and often shares updates on her social media.

Meanwhile, Simon co-hosts a BBC podcast called Ouch!, and he also does another podcast alongside his friend and colleague Phil Friend called The Way We Roll, in which they shoot the breeze about disability news.

He also performed in the Edinburgh Fringe comedy show Abnormally Funny People in 2005, which returned in 2015.

Gogglebox airs on Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
