Good Morning Britain viewers ‘switch off’ over ‘deluded’ Quentin Letts comments

Quentin Letts says people are happy with Brexit

Journalist Quentin Letts joined Thursday’s Good Morning Britain to give his view on the topics being discussed, but his statements that British people were pleased with the state of the country sparked a major backlash.

The divisive guest is a regular on the ITV show and often sparks a viewer response, but his latest comments had people “switching off”.

It came as the 60-year-old slammed Heathrow staff who have announced they are going on strike and went on the say people wake up delighted because of Brexit.

Fellow guests argued the journalist was talking “nonsense” to suggest there were no issues being faced by the country.

Other viewers accused him of being “deluded” and they fumed over the guest’s claims.

Talking about how 2,000 security officers at Heathrow have announced a 31-day strike from June 24, journalist Ayesha Hazarika, 47, argued: “People feel everything is broken, they can’t go on holiday, can’t go on a train, they can’t get their passport, they can’t get a doctor’s appointment, that’s the general view.

“But this is just terrible for everybody involved – it’s terrible for the passengers who will have saved up hard to get away for their summer holiday.

“It’s really bad for businesses as well, post-pandemic we’re trying to go for growth in this country and also I am sympathetic to the workers, it’s a difficult situation for them.

“The inflation crisis means that people are struggling, their day’s pay is not stretching as far as it used to.”

“I think they’re taking the mick,” Quentin disagreed, adding: “They’ve turned pay rises down, they must be pretty well-paid if they can afford to take 31 days off on strike.

“And there’s a sort of blackmail element there… and a political element – they want to whip up this idea of decline and misery, I just think, ‘You do your job.'”

Later, he responded to former Downing Street director of communications, Guto Harri’s comments, fuming: “Not everybody disliked Brexit, some of us feel we’re relieved to be away from the heel of Brussels!”

“Do you think it’s working?” Guto asked, to which Quentin replied: “Yes, I do.”

Guto went on: “Do you think people are feeling the benefits? Do you think they wake up every day thinking, ‘We are more influential in the world, we are richer and we have more control over our borders?’ because I don’t…”

“I think they possibly woke up thinking, ‘Yippee we don’t live under the heel of Brussels anymore,'” Quentin replied.

Ayesha scoffed: “That’s just nonsense, I don’t know what you’ve been on this morning, you think there’s no problems in the country and people are really happy…” (sic)

Viewers also responded to the claims, with Twitter user @DazCarson68 stating: “Quentin Letts is a deluded fool #gmb.”

@Wig82 fumed: “Quentin Letts…a reason to switch off #GMB.”

@Horrorsmith added: “I think a lot of people wake up and think ‘Oh bo******, it’s Quentin Letts on #GMB again’.”

@SoProudScottish posted: “Right-wing privileged posh boy bigot Quentin Letts criticising underpaid workers who do not serve him properly. ‘Just do your job’ For the rich to maintain their privileged lifestyle, there must always be a ready supply of poor people. #GMB.”

“#GMB does this journalist Quentin Lett on the show today ever do any homework or just shout his mouth off about things he knows nothing about – public and civil servants work just as hard if not harder than private industry workers,” @batesypoolfan shared.

@Annie82145914 remarked: “Quentin Letts at it again #gmb.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
