Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon is very much set in an era where the mythical fire-breathing creatures rule the skies with members of House Targaryen and House Velaryon claiming and flying them. This is a stark contrast to its predecessor Game of Thrones, where dragons had been extinct for hundreds of years before making an unexpected comeback as the second Long Night approached. In House of the Dragon, pretty much all of the Targaryens have their own dragons, which have either been claimed or they have bonded with at birth.

Why doesn’t Aemond have a dragon in House of the Dragon?
Sadly, this wasn’t the case for all the members of House Targaryen after Aemond Targaryen (played by Leo Ashton) was found to be lacking a dragon.
Aemond’s dragon-less status was a constant source of amusement and teasing not only from his older brother Aegon (Ty Tennant) but also his cousins.
The child was bullied by them all and in the most recent episode, they gave him a pig to ride instead of a dragon.
He was revealed to be without a dragon after failing to bond with the dragon egg placed in his cradle when he was a baby.
Additionally, there weren’t any dragons at the time of his birth he could claim for himself.
In George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood, all of this changed when Aemond and his family went to Dragonstone for Lady Laena’s (Nanna Blondell) funeral.
His father King Viserys (Paddy Considine) told him to claim Laena’s dragon Vhagar if he was “bold enough”.
In the book, Aemond managed to claim Vhagar for himself, with the almighty dragon becoming one of the largest during her lifetime.
Aemond went on to ride Vhagar into battle during the Dance of the Dragons when he was older and engaged in fierce combat with his foes on the mighty creature.
He tried to launch an attack on his uncle Daemon (Matt Smith) at Harrenhal and when this failed, Aemond embarked on a mission to take burn the riverlands.
Later, Daemon and Aemond would engage in a deadly fight known as the Battle Above the God’s Eye, which would result in both their deaths.
Unfortunately, both their dragons Vhagar and Caraxes would also pay a heavy price and lose their lives in the conflict.
House of the Dragon has been diverging and changing details from the source material to add an element of surprise for book readers to enjoy.
Therefore, the show is likely to play out differently to the book and just how Vhagar and Aemond bond remains to be seen.
The trailer for House of the Dragon episode seven – titled Driftmark – also suggests Aemond will be trying to claim Vhagar.
In one scene, one of Laena’s daughters whispers in the night: “Someone stole Vhagar.” The dragon features prominently in the preview, which again alludes to its importance.
Speaking on Inside The Episode, House of the Dragon’s showrunner Miguel Sapochnik said: “In the end, episode six is the beginning of the shift, where the story starts to become about the children.
“It’s not just Viserys and Daemon and Rhaenyra and Alicent. It’s also this new group of kids.
“It’s Aemond and Aegon and Jace and Luke. It’s multi-generational.”
While the show’s producer and writer Sara Hess said: “It’s a story about family, and about parents and children. And so, one of the themes that we are exploring is family beefs getting passed on to our children, and things that we do for our children that we maybe shouldn’t.”
Writer Ryan Condal added: “Those are the children that are going to essentially fight in this coming war together. There’s a whole bunch of unsaid, unspoken drama within these families. And Viserys’ deeply seated internal family problems come to boil over later on in the series.”
House of the Dragon airs on HBO on Sundays and Sky Atlantic on Mondays and streams on NOW
