Jeff Hordley is attending this year’s ITV British Soap Awards having once again been recognised for his portrayal of Emmerdale’s Cain Dingle.

This time around he is in the running for Best Dramatic Performance, with the Dingles up for Best Family on a soap.

He was first cast in the role in 2000 and left briefly in 2006 to pursue other projects, announcing his highly-anticipated return in 2009.

His character has been at the heart of some of the most dramatic storylines the soap has to offer, and his life off-screen has featured a fair share of highs and lows.

The 53-year-old was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease in 1996, having experienced symptoms since he was 20.

The star has been hospitalised three times with the debilitating condition, which he opened up about in a column.

Recalling the moment he feared he would die, he told The Mirror: “Lying in a hospital bed being told I had Crohn’s Disease was one of the most frightening experiences of my life.

“When I was just nine, my mum had died from the very same illness. My reaction was, ‘Am I going to die too?’

“It was a week before my 26th birthday. I’d suffered stomach cramps and diarrhoea for six years but it had never crossed my mind there was a connection.”

He went on to say how he dropped from 12 stone to nine, and was “really thin and pale”.

Jeff was concerned about how his now-wife Zoe Henry, who plays vet Rhona Goskirk in Emmerdale, would react as they had only been together for 18 months, after meeting at drama school.

However, he explained: “She was brilliant and said, ‘Listen, this is going to be fine’.”

Zoe and Jeff tied the knot in August 2003 and they have two children together called Violet and Stan.

Whilst appearing on Lorraine, Zoe opened up about how Jeff balances working with family life.

She said: “Jeff’s been amazing. He’s just taking the weight of what’s going on at home.

“Obviously we’ve got two kids, two dogs, we’ve got an allotment and he’s just managing all of that.”

Jeff lives in West Yorkshire, not far from where he films, in a cosy and colourful house with his family.

He and Zoe share a passion for gardening and have a large yard filled with vegetable patches and plants.
