Inside Vigil’s Rose Leslie life off-screen: From co-star marriage, cancelled series and castle home

Rose Leslie will soon be back on our screens in a big way, starring in season two of BBC hit drama Vigil, opposite Suranne Jones.

She is back as Kirsten, who is pulled in to help figure out why a military drone has started murdering soldiers on the ground at an airbase during a training exercise.

She is based in Scotland looking after Amy's daughter Poppy and the two are forced to work together across two continents.

But what is her life like away from the cameras? We delve into Rose’s life off-screen.

Where did Rose Leslie grow up?

The actress, 36, was was born in Aberdeen, Scotland, and raised at Lickleyhead Castle in Aberdeenshire, her family's 15th-century ancestral seat.

She lived there until she was 10 years old before moving to France with her family, where she lived for three years.

Upon her return to the UK, she was sent to Millfield, a boarding school in Somerset, before winning a place at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

She later gained a BASSC certificate in stage combat and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in 2008.

Is Rose Leslie married?

Rose Leslie is married to Game of Thrones co-star Kit Harington, who played her character Ygritte’s love interest Jon Snow.

They met while filming season two of Game of Thrones in 2011, and sparked rumours of a relationship after first being spotted on a dinner date back in 2012.

But it wasn’t until 2016 they finally went public with their romance, when they arrived at the Olivier Awards together.

When asked about the relationship in 2017, Kit told Esquire: “It's as much her relationship as it is mine and I can't speak for both of us. But yeah, we are very, very happy. So that's what I'll say about that.”

In September 2017, the couple announced their engagement in a very sweet way – by putting a notice in The Times.

The pair then married on 23 June 2018, at Rose’s ancestral castle in Scotland.

Does Rose Leslie have children?

Yes, Rose has two children, having given birth to her youngest child, a daughter, in July of this year.

They confirmed the news via their reps, who told Page Six simply: "They're delighted to have welcomed a little girl into the family."

Their first child, a son, was born in January 2021.

Speaking of this pregnancy in October 2020, she said: “I am thrilled to be expecting. I can't wait to meet the new member of our family.”

What other shows has Rose Leslie starred in?

Away from Vigil, Rose is best known for playing the role of Ygritte in Game of Thrones, a woman of the Free Folk.

The character met a brutal end when she was fatally shot in the chest by an arrow in the ensuing battle and died in Jon Snow’s arms.

She’s also starred in Downton Abbey as Gwen Dawson, appeared in Luther as Emma Lane and Kenneth Branagh’s 2022 film Death on the Nile.

Her most recent TV credit was in the The Time Traveler’s Wife last year, a TV adaptation of the book by Audrey Niffenegger.

Rose appeared as the co-lead alongside The White Lotus star Theo James.

However, the show – written by Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat – was generally poorly received and cancelled after one season.
