In 1952, the couple founded the New England Society – the oldest ghost hunting group in New England and quickly gained notoriety as respected paranormal investigators.

In 1980, author Gerald Brittle published the book The Demonologist which focused on Ed and Lorraine Warren and their paranormal pursuits.

However, Brittle wasn't best pleased with the release of The Conjuring and filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros, New Line Productions and film director James Wan.

Brittle believed the film series infringed upon an exclusive contract he had signed with the couple regarding the subject of his book.

In 2017, Warner Bros settled the case with Brittle.
